OK, I know the RxES can be too powerful to run with a cab loaded with 2 Celestion Blues, but what would the limit be on pushing this cab? One of my buddies just got a 2x12 loaded with Blues, and he wants to plug my RxES into it just to demo it. I told him about the stories of Brad Paisley changing to the Webers because he kept blowing the Blues with this amp, but he still isn't convinced. I normally run the amp at about noon on the volume and use the overdose for a solo boost, this is all with single coil guitars. At that setting, would the Blues be able to handle the RxES? I wanted to run this by folks on the forum before I let him blow his speakers up.

I wouldn't do it. Keep in mind that regardless where you put your volume control, any amp can develop full power depending on what's coming in the input. For example, someone steps on your guitar cord and the amp makes that terrible nasty sound it makes when that happens. That could be at full power.
Celestion Alnico Blues x 2 = 30 Watts Max. Believe it.

That's kind of what I figured. Just thought I would check first though.

There is one way you could try it. Stick an Airbrake between the amp and the speakers an set the Airbrake at least two or three clicks down from the top. Then your amp can go to full power and still not manage to get more than 30 watts to the speakers. Of course there's some danger that you could have an accident of forgetfulness, but for just a test this would work out fine.

Yeah, I already told him to forget about it, especially since neither one of us own an attenuator yet. Believe it or not, I haven't been yelled at too many times even with the RxES cranked up pretty high. I do run it through a sinlge Alnico Gold rather than a 2x12, so that helps me control the volume a bit. The thing that suprised me most about the RxES is how controlable it really is for such a loud amp. I almost passed on getting one due to the wattage alone, but finally I bit the bullet. Best decision I ever made because the RxES is my #1 amp of all time now.

Yeah, I love mine. Too many amps here though - I have a hard time deciding what to take out! But that doesn't stop me from Gassing over new ones....

Hey Benttop,
Just wondering how the RX ES compares. The Paisley clip on DR Zs site sounds great. Does it stay pretty clean if you want it too? Is it voxy? How does it compare to other Zs you've had? Thanks. I'm still torn between the Stang Ray and an RX ES.

Hey Benttop, Just wondering how the RX ES compares. The Paisley clip on DR Zs site sounds great. Does it stay pretty clean if you want it too? Is it voxy? How does it compare to other Zs you've had? Thanks. I'm still torn between the Stang Ray and an RX ES. When I first got my RXES I had about a dozen questions exactly like yours, and since I have a Stingray here too, I instrumented a comparison clip. But in answer to your question, you can keep it very clean and still pretty loud - lots of clean headroom, especially if you use the low input. Here's that clip I was talking about: 3/10/2007 Compare Stingray and RXES into Stereo Alnico Golds Setup: Grosh Retro Classic VT > Radial JX-2 > Channel 1 of JX-2: Stingray Head > Airbrake (-8 db) > Left Alnico Gold Channel 2 of JX-2: RXES Head > THD Hot Plate (-8 db) > Right Alnico Gold Stingray Settings: Volume: 6 Tone: 4 Cut: Noon RXES Settings: Start of clip: Volume: 4 OD: Off Treble: Dimed Middle: Dimed Bass: Dimed 2/3 through clip: Volume: 6 OD: On Treble: Dimed Middle: Dimed Bass: Dimed Stingray is heard first on the clip. I've been running a cab with 2/12 Blues with no problems for close to 6 months now. Outside of practice, the band plays 3 1-hour sets (classic rock) and the Blues always sound great. (Playing steady about twice a week.) The cab is mic'ed.
I run the vol at 11 with the airbrake at 1 click; mids at noon, bass at 11 and treble at 1. I use a Keeley modded Tube Screamer and a Xotic BB and a Picture Wah. Guitars are a R8 and Grosh Retro (humbucker in bridge). There is also another guitar player (Lonestar with a 2/12 cab).
I have no worries - besides Z said thumbs up but watch the overall volume as duration is not the issue, excessive volume on those speakers is.
With tone and oneness, Mike

Well there you go - those who say it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are already doing it.
