I bought a couple of Tone Tubbies from fiestared69 here on the board (great guy). I got the TT "H bomb" combo from him (1 alnico hemp cone & 1 40/40 ceramic hemp cone). It seems like the 6545 was made for this setup - I've always used a pair of grrenbacks in a 2X12 cab with my 6545, but the TTs really shine with this amp.
Our sound guy usually tells me to tone down the highs on the 45 side as the highs get a little harsh through the PA (with greenbacks). Since the TTs are somewhat dark speakers they really tone this down. I'm gigging with the 6545 and the TTs for the 1st time this evening, so we'll see what our sound guy thinks. The only trick is how to mic the cabinet (which speaker or between 'em).
But in jammin in my studio, the 45 side sounds phenominal (so does the 65 side, but the 45 side is where I found the most improvement with the TTs). You can really push the hi eq on the 45 side and get a little more grit out of that side without the piercing highs. Love the greenies, but the TTs are definitley my new thang with the 6545.

I was thinking about getting a 2x12 with that combo. Sounds like it would be a killer set up.

i really like the alnico/ ceramic combination setup i have, too (celestion gold and v30 in a 2x12 closed-back mesa recto cab). i've also tried the 6545 through the same cab with v30's, an open-back matchless cab with custom matchless celestions, as well as a bogner 2x12 oversized cab with v30's. the alnico/ ceramic combo blows the others i tried away. i still wonder what that speaker combo would sound like through those other cabs... but it sounds amazing, as it is. and i agree-- the 45 side is the one that really shines with the addition of the alnico. probably because of the ef86 preamp tube... same tube that plays a roll in the vox sound sometimes. really adds some vox chime to the 45 side. i played a vox head through a cab with ceramic matchless celestions, and it lost most of its vox chime. tried it with the alnico/ ceramic combo and the chime was back. bottom line is that that alnico rocks. on the other hand, i played a bogner ecstasy through that alnico/ ceramic setup and liked the 2x V30 all ceramic setup better. seems like the alnicos mesh better with the ef86-based amps than the 12ax7's. though the 65 side of the z (12ax7) still sounds really good with the alnico, so i guess it's a toss-up.
never tried a full alnico 2x12 setup without the ceramic. was told i might miss some of what that ceramic had to offer...
6545 is an amazing amp. great sound...

Yeah, I'm with you on the combo with the gold (and the EF86/alnico comment). I've primarily used the 6545 with a Marshall 1936 2X12 cab (closed back) loaded with a couple of greenbacks (due to their lower efficiency - really tames the volume). I tried a gold with various greenbacks (G12H, G12M, & G12C, and a G12H30) and really liked those combos as well. (Liked the G12C/Gold combo the best)
The one thing I've noticed when pairing alnicos with ceramics is that the alnico speaker seems a little louder than the ceramic (probably 'cause it's a little more effiicient), but it's a great tone as I dig the compression of an alnico speaker.
I gigged with the H bomb on Saturday, great tone all night, albeit a little louder than the 2 greenbacks, but it was an outdoor gig, so I really got to push the 6545 a bit (until the sound guy finally put the "lid" on me). I liked he TT setup a little better than a gold combo as the 45 side is less spikey. The hemp cones are a little bizarre as they are much softer than paper cones - that's probably why the speakers are somewhat dark.
