hey guys im just curious how your mazerati compares to your Rx in headroom. i have an orignal Rx (2x12 with greenbacks) and its loud as hell and plenty clean for loud gigs. combined with my full drive that ive had for years i can get any sound i want. i just really need an excuse to get another Z specifically a mazerati! ;D

IMO the Mazerati has a cleaner headroom capacity. The RX is awesome...but it gets a cool gainy/poweramp distortion thing happening when you crank it up. I have been using the airbrake with it. 2 incredible amps no doubt. Best of luck in the search for the Mazerati. 6strang

I have a different take. I owned a Mazerati head briefly. I couldn't get it to be clean enough, even using lower gain tubes. I don't own an RX but when I've played it at the store It has a lot of clean headroom. Perhaps more than the Maz sr. Use the low input and overdose off and it sounds great!

The Mazerati must be a real chameleon, because when I had mine I couldn't get any gain out of it at all - it was clean almost all the way up. I suppose it must be what instrument is plugged in and what speakers are in use, but I thought it was a great clean amp.
I have the RXES and set correctly it has a ton of clean headroom. The clip I just put up in the sounds section was done really very loud here in my studio (I play louder here than on stage) and it's just barely starting to have and edge of breakup - and I had the Overdose ON for that clip, and I was also in the high input. So I'm certain the RXES has "enough" clean headroom for about any situation.

If I'm not mistaken about 2005 the 'Rati had a slight revision increasing headroom.
Mine was a 2005 and like Steve, found abundant headroom.....hardly any amp break up at all.
I'm thinking Billy's was an earlier version.

Must've been because even at dinner club volumes it was clipping. The other reason I let it go is that I couldn't take those glassy highs off the top. It needed a cut control.

I think I was using it with a Tele with Kinman Avn 48s. They're a little bright so that may have been part of it but also if it had more internal gain that would probably make it seem brighter too. I'm pretty sure I was using it with one of my old EV 12s. They aren't bright but they reproduce anything that comes into them. You were probably using a darker speaker? What my Mazerati reminded me of more than anything was a louder version of the way the 40s Gibson amps with field coil speakers sound.

Looking for more top end and less mids, I swapped in a pair of Weber Ceramic Blue Dogs. When those broke in, the top disappeared, so I went back to the Celestions. This is actually fascinating to me - how different we all perceive our tones. Makes the world go 'round I guess.

well, i had a blonde 2000 mazerati head,, i tried various power tubes in it,, according to dr z, the power tranny was smaller/different than the newer ones and he said it is "dirtier", i can say i did get a very pink floyd guitar tone with nice break up. i couldnt call it real clean. and it wasnt as loud as i would have liked it. i would have to say, just a louder carmen ghia, definitely. i never played one of thenewer ones.

My 'rati is a late (Nov) 2004 model. It has plenty of headroom! Wonderful, wonderful amp.
