Well, I'm on the verge of ordering a RxES and 2x12 cab to run with my StangRay. I just couldn't hold off any longer. For those of you with this amp and cab setup, how do you like the tone of the RxES running with Greenbacks? I'm kind of stuck between that or a 1x12 with the Gold. I love the thick/meaty tone of the Ray for clean to slightly dirty country stuff with C-Blues (which is what I play a majority of the time), and I was wondering if the Greenbacks would make a good compliment to the Ray in that context? I would probably use the RxES more for a little dirtier tone than the Ray, so which speaker would you recommend and why? Thanks

This is entirely personal preference here, but I've never been all that nuts about Greenbacks. Breakup too early, not as much clean low end, etc etc. My RxES and 2x12 open-back cab arrived with 2 GBs in the cab by accident. I had to play it for a few weeks till the G12H and V30 arrived. The difference, to me, was significant. The G12H / V30 combination is a good one. And since you already have 2 Blues in your Standg Ray, I'd recommend the G12H / V30.

G12 H30/ V30 is very, very nice with the RX, and most Z's for that matter... I like the greenbacks for lower volume but they do woof out if you drive em a little hard... But I think the Weber Alnico or ceramic SilverBell can't be beat with the RX's... to me (JMO) it is just about the perfect speaker for a little different tone, and aggression outta the Z... while still getting a little chime and remainingl smooth/ not harsh at all... and a Blue dog / Silver bell combo is very sweet also... I am continually impressed with the Silverbell everytime I play it with the RX or the Maz Sr. but it's all about what you like and are trying to get... JMHO/ YMMV.

I think I heard somewhere that the Doc's favorite combo was 2 Greenbacks with the RxES - that's what mine came stock with. Sounded great, but when I put in the Silver/Blue combo (ceramic), it really came alive.
Hope this helps!

my original strenght came stock with two v-30s and that combo was a bit over the top. swapped one for the G12H30 and life is good without spending a ton of cash. I ran the amp through a matchless combo's speakers that had a G12H30 and a greenie in it and that was truely cool. pretty much handed the matchless it's arse.

Well, I ended up going with the RxES head and 1x12 cab loaded with a Celestion Gold. Based on some of the clips with that speaker on this board, especially those by "benttop", I think I made a good choice. Can't wait to get it.

Gee, thanks aj! I don't think you'll be disappointed - the Golds work really nice with this amp. I love the sound of mine.

Those awesome clips got a lot of people in trouble. ;D ;D Well it was Bill's (Madison) Stang Ray clip that sucked me into buying the Golds. Dang he got some cool tones on that clip... I'm glad I got them too!
