Still lovin' my RXES but I have a product suggestion for the good Dr.
How about a RXES Jr!!!
Have all of the tonal goodness of the RXES in a lower powered package. It worked for the Maz series amps.

I would be right in line for a low powered Rx ES. What a fantastic idea!

Wow. I'd be all over that, and I don't even OWN a Z yet!
I've been trying for awhile now to figure out which Z would work best for me, but it's tough because everybody loves all of them, plus there's virtually nowhere to play all the amps to compare (except at Myles' house... hey Myles! you should have a "Z party!")
But an "OTC" would combine EXACTLY what I want most:
-lower power -EF86 -EL84s -footswitchable boost
The only thing that would make it absolutely unbelievable would be a built-in Airbrake (similar to the Carr Mercury...not a fan of the Carr's tone, but the attenuator actually works great!) But that's a small nit.
I'd definitely order up a OTC as my 1st Z.
ah...dare to dream...

That sounds like a good idea to me!
I don't own a Z yet, but hopefully in the future when I can afford a new amp. Something toned down a little than the 2X12 combo of the RXES. I was thinking of looking into an RXES.
I agree, it worked for the Maz18/38, why not for the RXES.

Want to pile on here. I'm also going to post elsewhere asking for suggestions on low-powered amps that might sound vaguely like the RX-ES. I love my RX - perfect for band practice and shows - but it's just too damn loud for night-time use.
I want an amp I can write songs on that will sound like the RX, only much much quieter. 1/2 watt or less, I think.

Given that most RxES players - ok, at least me - use an Airbrake with their RxES, the idea of a lower wattage RxES is certainly intriguing.

In other thread somewhere, we might have finally beat the Doc into submission- he said he was going to have his Rx builder work up a 2-EL84 version, use the Ghia OT, and see what happens... the "Over the Counter" RxES OTC
The DAY that amp becomes available, I'm buying one. THE DAY.

THE DAY. Did build one , but I was a bit underwhelmed. Once turned up there was very little difference between base sound and boost, ala little or no clean head room. And it still was pretty loud. Ran a little shoot out of my 2-EL-84 amps, Ghia , MAZ JR NR , and RX OTC , the MAZ JR did the best in versatility and lower volume drive, the Ghia well turn it up and wail, and the RX OTC was lest impressive. Sorry to report this but it is an objective critique. I will try again later with the design, but for now it's back to the Evan and the MAZERATI GT............ DR.Z

Wow. Very dissapointed to hear that about the OTC. Just curious- did the development of the MazJr, at the time, also have some "issues" that had to be worked out to get a good sound out of it, or was it pretty much "just pull 2 tubes" on that one?
Thanks Z, Eric

Just curious- did the development of the MazJr, at the time, also have some "issues" that had to be worked out to get a good sound out of it, or was it pretty much "just pull 2 tubes" on that one? Thanks Z, Eric No I did need some development time . Let history note at the time I was building MAZ 38 ( Invasions ) Big clean amps with negative feedback and a Presence control, The JR evolved to lower output higher gain amp, then the MAZ SR evolved to upgrade the older MAZ 38's. The JR's didn't birth very easy, but have become a main stay in my line. I will re-look at the RX OTC as all I did was change the OT, pull two tubes, and adjust a new bias setting. I did add a Master Volume though. On the Mazerati GT well it is an upgraded design ULTRA HIGH GAIN, quite a change for me, but what the heck I will let it get evaluated and decide on adding it as a model. For all of you keeping score the Evan is doing fine, I'm on my third iteration of the design, waiting for the approved chassis's to arrive so I can build a second and do side by side comparisons. Again another tuff birth but I'm designing with a look ahead approach so it is a little slower. Found out how hard it is to get an overdriven 6L6 not to sound too toothy ( top end bite ) but smooth and driving. Easy to get a great rich clean tone. DR.Z

Thanks for the update! What you go thru sounds like me trying to mix a band recording. Try this, listen a while. Change that, listen again. And on and on and on and on...................

How does Fuchs get their 6l's to get smooth gain with no "ice pick"? Thats what I want to see. Will the new Maz GT be anything like a ODS? I have this Robben Ford tone fixation. But I want to do it with a Z! Any chance?
