For those who haven't had an opportunity to try a Z28 with a Brake Lite or are considering it but have not taken the plunge I strongly suggest you run, not walk, to your friendly neighborhood Z dealer and pick one up.
Simply Astonishing Sound. Might still get you kicked out of your apartment, but for getting the goods at a more manageable volume, remaining friends with your band mates and not getting fired by the bar, the Brake Lite cannot be beat.
Straight into the amp with my stock '69 Tele it is the finest tone I've ever had.

Spent a couple of hours on the Z-28 with the brake lite (at home) again this weekend. Great combination for sure.

Any reason to think that a brake lite would sound different than an Air Brake? ArnieZ

has anybody had the same luck with the weber mini mass? Dropped so much of my dough on the amp gonna be a while before the airbrake is in sight...$75 sure would be nice. -jody

I dont have a brake lite, but I do have an airbrake, if I want to stay friendly with the neighbors, lower decibels straight in is the cool fendery-comparitive tones, add the airbrake and crank it for marshally-comparitive tones.
Yet there's always the Doc's flavor no matter how I set the amp up

The Ghia and the minimass are a great combo, especially if you play with the ohm settings. With the Z-28 the tone is a little odd, but only on back pu crunch rhythm Brett

I have one that I use with my 28 but I am not an attenuator fan at all. It is OK for practice but I would rather put a pedal in front and turn the amp down. I had an airbrake that I bought for a Fender Tonemaster I had but it just didn't sound the same to me. I still use the mini mass from time to time but basically put it on its highest setting without any of the EQ and then run the treble on the amp almost at full and it sounds best to me. It does work well but like I said I am not a fan of attenuators. Also I like rock sounds from this amp not so much clean. It loves Strats!

I've never had an opportunity to try an Air Brake, though the general concensus seems to be that the lower / bedroom level settings are not as pleasing.
With the Brake Lite the amp (my Z28 anyway) is still loud, but it has the feel of a much louder amp. I think that's it's strength. I haven't had an opportunity to rehearse or play out yet with this, but I think that's the situation where the Brake Lite will really shine.

I use an older Weber mini mass, load dump, and full size Mass on my Z-28, each will very good results. As with any attenuator, the more you attenuate the more effect it has on the tone (compared with unattenuated), and typically its the airy high freqs that get lost. But it still sounds better, to me, than running the amp low with a pedal (YMMV).
I used to own an Airbrake but needed the switchable impedence the Webers offered. I didn't notice any difference between the Airbrake and the Webers.
