I have heard that getting a good NOS rectifier is the way to go as they hold up better than current production tubes.
If this is the case, does a SS rectifier make a good new production solution?
I guess I am asking if the NOS Rectifier is simply more reliable than current tubes, then I would think SS would be the best option.
Or does the NOS tube still provide the sag only available from tubes, but lasts longer than current tubes.
Or do NOS tubes sound better than current production tubes given that the current production tube survives the test?

Or does the NOS tube still provide the sag only available from tubes, but lasts longer than current tubes. IMO this is the reason. I've been using a GE 5U4GB in my Route 66 lately, but I also love the NOS GZ34's for a bit less sag. I've only had two NOS rectifiers quit on me in 20 years, but were damaged in shipping...

I have a SS 5AR4 for my Rati, not installed right now. It does work, but no sag. Very immediate reaction, could work well for very fast articulate players, or even heavy metal. Although, a Mazerati is not meant for heavy metal of course. It's a cheap way to have a back up, won't suffer damage like a tube, I'm sure it can be damaged, but it's not made of glass.

As with the other tubes in your amp you always need back up, so I picked up a Weber Copper Cap for my Maz 38 (under 25 bucks I believe) and also bought a NOS from Mike at KCA as the replacement. I put in the SS just to try it and didn't hear much difference, so put the NOS in and keep the SS near by as a back up. The rectifier that came with the amp lasted over 3 years but when it goes it's gone - get a back up at least.
