O have a Script ES w/ Z-best 2x12 cab. Weber silver bell alnico speakers.
To get the speakers to the level that they are breaking up so I can dial back guitar volume for clean and dial up for some gain, the levels are too loud for the smaller venues I play. It seems that the best tones are at the higher volume levels which are too loud to be useful.
Any suggestions for getting great tone in smaller venues?

Why don't you get a Z break or a Hotplate?

You may also want to try less efficient speakers. Check out the Eminence Blue Tick Hounds...they're advertised as breaking up earlier and have a 99dB sensitivity.

I was just going to suggest greenbacks, which may be even lower SPL than the Blue Tick Hounds but more expensive. Also try the low input with the dose switch up. I like the Airbake too. The pickups in my ASAT classic, to me, are hot but warm and that helps. Of course the cheapest rout is a pedal when all else fails, and it will sound as good if not better than alot of other stuff out there. I'm not a pedal guy but I secretly enjoy them. Just hate setting them up and turnng the knobs. Maybe a hotter preamp tube but with that dose switch up its already pretty hot.

You're right, I just checked and they're a 98dB SPL rating vs. the 99dB for the Blue Tick Hounds. Not sure of the price difference, but 1dB wouldn't make or break the overall volume level...I've never played a cab with the Blue Tick Hounds though, so I wouldn't know how they compare.

I think +3db = twice as loud so 1 db just might do it....maybe someone who knows for sure can chime in.

I think +3db = twice as loud so 1 db just might do it....maybe someone who knows for sure can chime in. Yes, +3dB = twice the power: In Radio Frequency terms: 30dB = 1 Watt 33dB = 2 Watts 36dB = 4 Watts ...and on and on it goes. Going the other way, you half the power for each 3dB drop: 27dB = .5 watts 24dB = .25 watts I'm not sure whether the 1dB difference in speaker sensitivity would make a huge, noticeable difference in overall volume, but price and tone would be a better deciding factor in that case. Their SPL measurements are more likely to be an average or best case, with each speaker being slightly different than another. I'm not sure if their tolerances allow for a +/- 1dB range or better, but they could also have different measurement methods that could account for some of the differences. Sorry to hijack your volume issue thread!
