Finally getting around to re-tubing my MAZ-38. After reading some of the tube-related threads, I have a little better feel for what tube has which effect. There are 2 areas that sort of puzzle me, though.
1. The different "flavors" of 12AX7's in different positions. I'd have thought that maybe the ones with the coiled filaments (12AX7LPS) would be the quietest (other things being equal), but I don't see them recommended "across the board". Can anyone enlighten me?
2. EL84s - not even counting all of the various "vintage" tubes, there are so many flavors from which to choose. My amp had a set of EI EL84s in it and they sound excellent to my rather tin ear. I figured to do some swapping more or less for giggles. I was told that the good Dr. sends them out now with JJ's, so I ordered a quad. And also "for giggles" I ordered a matched octet of Russian EL84Ms (hey - for $26 bucks, if they sound bad, I don't mind dumping them or stuffing them in a cheaper amp). Does anyone have experience with them?
3. Took my amp to a local "amp fest" here in the San Diego area a few weeks ago. There were vintage M's, a Dumble, a new MB, Jaguars (local mfg) and a few others. Most of the others were heads played through vintage 4X12 cabs and here I was with my combo. It stood up very well to some high-buck vintage amp set ups! They can have their $20,000 + set-ups. For what I need, the MAZ-38 SR 2 x 12 with Celestion blues is the amp for me. I'm not a gigging pro, so maybe I'm not as particular, but I'm a happy camper!
