I currently have a Prescription ES 2x12 Combo and i Play Teles and Strats.I am into a variety of Music.I am heavily into Brad Paisley on the Country side and on the Blues rock side i am a SRV/John Mayer kind of guy.My question is i have never played through a Sting/Stang Ray and i LOVE my RX/ES and was wondering if it would be worth moving my Red 2X12 Combo RX ES for a Ray or Keep jamming with what ive got.Any help is appreciated guys. Thanks in advance, Mike

Hey Mike,
We seem to be carbon copies of each other!
I'm a big fan of paisley's work, but my idols are SRV and the like, and I've been into John Mayer since before he was really known.
I had plans to get an RX ES for about a year, and I almost got it, but then the S' Ray came out. I was going to wait to get a Stingray/ Stang Ray, but I had an opportunity to get an RX ES head in the color combo I wanted, at a great price, so I went for it. I haven't regretted it since! While the Stang Ray is such a tempting amp, I think the RX ES, in its own rite, is in a class all it's own. I've never been happier with an amp. After having this, I don't have any plans on picking up a Stang Ray.

I think the RXES would be better if you want to cover both styles.

Though I don't own either, I've played both. They are both superb amps, but they do sound different. The Ray was super clean with a very complex and defined tone; the RX ES was very clean, with great definition, but felt punchier and more capable of rockin' out. Dr. Z's descriptions of both amps are very accurate IMO...the Ray has a very smooth feel while the RX ES has a more percussive feel. My opinion...why decide...buy both! (I'd love to!) ;D

Thanks guys for all the quick replys.I think that the RX ES is really overlooked a lot lately since the RAY has came out.Maybe we need to talk it up a bit and get the Prescriptions back up there.I know i have decided to totally keep mine now. Thanks a bunch guys. You guys are the best.Let me know if i can help with anything. Mike

Mike, I'm right with ya on keeping the RX on the forefront. This amp NEEDS to be noticed more, and definitely deserves it. Mine isn't going anywhere.

I finally got to hear a Stang Ray, courtesy of Billyguitar and Kccheers! I own an RX ES and I'd have to say if your tastes run closer to blackfacey/Dumbly SRV and Mayer tones, the RX ES is the amp to get. The Stang Ray is REALLY cool , but its a Vox thing. Here's a dorky but I think, good analogy...here goes...
The RX ES is like a perfectly clean canvas that is good at painting just about anything on. The Stang Ray is a canvas that already has a background painted on it. Both equally ready for art to be made on it, but the Stang Ray just gives you a hue to start with, where as the RX ES is virtually neutral.
Yeah, that was bad....but its the best I can do tonight! I can get a pretty nice "Voxey" thing with my RX ES when I turn on my Keeley Blues Driver with the gain way down. Its my "background" changer!

That was a very good analogy of the 2 amps. It was my first time to see and hear the Stangray also. Janinedoubly is spot on with this one.

I've used paint canvas analogies before myself and I think it's a great way to describe amps. Good job Chris!

I was thinking of the Stingray for a long time. But then pulled the trigger on my RxES combo, and I still don't regret it. It's definitely "the sound" for me.

These amps are both so good that I really wouldn't want to pick one or the other. Someday I'll get an RXES.

I have yet to play an RXES but owned a very early StingRay, the 'Ray just was not the amp for me and Iwas probably the first to sell one. The RXES totally has my attention these days though as an alternate tone for my Route 66.
I like a lil more grit than the "ray has.

Both amps are wonderfull amps.RxES can cover more ground ,not to say that Ray is not , but in different ways.I love my Rays. IMO,our taste of music change from time to time as musicians.Go for both.
