I'm just curious how all you RX ES owners set up your amp, and what your favorite EQ is. I purchased an RX ES about a week ago and I wanted to get a feel for how people were dialing in their sound. While it may not work for me, I'd like to get a few ideas about how to find my sweet spot. Maybe by referencing a few of your settings I can find my own in there.
I'm also using a Timmy and an OCD for my OD/Lead tones. I'd love to know what you guys are using (if anything) for your OD through this amp. Does the RX ES like certain pedals more than others? I've been interested in maybe an RC/AC Booster, but I'd like to know more about some experiences with this amp.
Any feedback on this thread is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
Dan

Hi Teleking36, congrats on the new RXES! My settings were bass at 1 o'clock, middle at noon, treble at 10 o'clock. Overdose off unless I really wanted to rock! Volume at 9 or 10 o'clock when at home, at around 12 to 2 o'clock at gigs. It sounded huge! It absolutely loves pedals. It loved my analogman modded Maxon OD-9 and the Xotic BB preamp. You can click on the web page under my avatar and listen to the Voodoo tune if you want to hear the RXES with those settings and the BB preamp. I think I might have turned the treble to 10-11 o'clock for the recording but I am not sure. The RC booster also works great, thought I used it as a volume boost, not a gain boost. The overdose works much better for a gain boost. I did not have the overdose foot-switchable and tended to use the Analogman OD-9(now an MJM Blues Devil) for those cleans sounds with hair to crunch rhythm sounds. I am sure the AC booster works great as well. Brad Paisley uses both those pedals with his setup. The Timmy must sound great with your amp. Have fun and let us know what you find works for you. Here is some karma for the new Z. ;D

I have mine set w/ overdose off (i don't even plug in the footswitch 3/4 of the time)
Input: High Overdose: Off Treble: 8:45ish - just a tad lower than 9 o'clock Mid: Noonish - 1 Bass: around 2:30ish - just a tad higher than 3 o'clock
i play through CIJ teles (one w/ a Fralin Blues) and they're a tad bright - as the RxES is as well. then it goes through TU-15 ~ Hellbilly ~ Huckleberry ~ RC Booster ~ Tonefactor Envelope Filter ~ BYOC Chorus
hope this helps.

Hi teleking36. I run my RXES into a Z-Best cab with the V30/G12H speaker combination. I isolate the cabinet from the stage floor with an Auralex Gramma ISO Pad. For live performance, I tend to mic the V30 slightly off-axis with a Shure SM-57. My guitars are a Strat, Tele, and Parker Nitefly, and the overdrives are a Boss BD-2 w/Keeley Phat Mod, and a Fulltone Fulldrive II. Here are the amp settings that provide me with a "fat" clean tone that I can build upon with overdrive pedals when needed: Input: Low Overdose: On Volume: 8:30 to 10:00 (Most often 9:00) Treble: 8:30 to 9:00 Middle: 10:00 to 11:00 Bass: 10:00 to 11:00 Speaker Output: 4 Ohm Congratulations on your amp purchase. I love my RXES, and it's all I use these days. lowlifesocialites.tripod.com

Hey teleking36, congrats on your amp purchase. I run my RXES with either a RI SG, an American Series Strat, Jon Kammerer Chambered body, or a Homemade Esquire.
One of these will go through my pedal chain. Boss TU-2 --> Thomas Organ Wah --> Keeley FuzzHead--> Barber Direct Drive --> Klon --> H&K Rotosphere.
I run the amp with the Overdose switch on, Bass at 3 0' Clock, Mids at around 1 to 3 O' clock, Treble almost off. This is through a Crate 2 x 12 cab. My Dr. Z 2 x 10 is supposed to be here in a week.

sounds good guys....
i'm still experimenting. i just put a weber alnico silver bell 30w in place of the V30 and it seems like it'll be a great setup. from what i've done in the past few hours, i'll be somewhere close to this EQ setup:
bass -> 2:30 middle -> 11:00 treble -> 7:30/8:00
overdose off, lo input
i'll have to do some more tweaking this weekend, but it sounds great!

I posted a similar thread above re: volumes..... I don't know how you guys get smaller to mid sized indoor venue sound levels with your volume knob at 10. It's screaming loud [great sound, but really loud] through my Z-best with weber 50W silver bells. I'm peeling the sound guys face off. Instrument mic's are irrelevant. The sound guy cant control my sound levels and the other guys can't keep up...... I have to play it at lower volume levels, use pedals to get the OD since volume levels on the head that get the good OD is just too much db. [even though it sounds sweet...]
help?!!

A one 12 cab, beam blocker, Air Brake, those are about your only options and then the o/d pedals.

surrealmccoy, IMO a Z best has no place in a small club, great cab but you need a really large venue or outdoor gig. Stuff one of those Silvers or an Eminance Texas Heat in an open back 1x12 cab, if that's not enough grab an Airbrake and that oughta do it. I (as most here) understand your delima. My main band plays small bars and for years I've been getting smaller amps, actually have played a gig with a Mini Z ! Now I have a second thing going and we play larger places with full house sound and I run my Route 66 up around 3:00 with an open back 2x12 Z cab with Greenbacks OR a 1x12 with a Weber Blue Dog. Do your homework and get a lower Db Speaker, the Emi Texas Heat handles 150 watts, has low effeciency at 97Db, sounds like a vintage Jensen and Celestion had a baby Best of luck, Curt

Great advice. Thanks for the help.
Emi Texas Heat in 8 ohm or 16 ohm? What is the difference tonally? I assume the 16 ohm will be a little quiter than the 8?

The 8 or 16 ohm choice is to match your amp or another speaker, the efficiency of the speaker is the same. I would get an 8 ohm so it would be easier to either match up with other speakers or other amps later.
