3rd gig. Speakers breaking in well. This thing really does it on a gig. I played my G&L legacy special and asat classic. Cover band that runs the gamut. Low input with the dose swith engaged. Volume up 3/4 mids just passed mid and bass just about half. The treble cant bet turned passed 3-4 with the switch up without getting feedback..still got great tone, its a bright amp..Doesn't do this at home. The joint only held about hundred people and we were on satge. Anyone else have that happen? Kind of a doulble post. Review / question.

the feedback may be accentuated by frequencies your bandmates are generating affecting your guitar though i've never seen that with a solid body. Bass players send my archtop howling all the time. An Rx at 3/4 volume in a 100 seat joint just amazes me. Anything past 10 o'clock and i'm getting looks from the band (good because it sounds great but bad because it is way to loud) and warnings from the soundman.

Thanks for the reply. I really use the whole volume knob. Thats one thing I love about the amp. It cleans up wothout getting muddy and I dont have to full out for the leads....but I usually am...Maybe it was a bigger place than I thought.

That's the way I used my RxES in small clubs...overdose on, volume at 2:00, inefficient speaker, and work the volume knob. I would only max out on certain solos, usually in the later sets. Guitar vol between 5 & 10, it was always easy to dial in the correct volume & drive.
Never had the feedback problem you speak of though. I could run the treble to noon without feedback, although it was normally at 9:00.

I changed the ef86 and the 12ax7's and that seemed to tame it at home but on the gig a different story...what preamp tubes do you have in yours? By the way this feedback occurs without or with the guitar plugged in..and I dont use pedals..a wha once in a while...

Hi Frank4001, when you say changed the EF-86 and 12AX7s what do you mean exactly? Did you change them out for different tubes alltogether?

When I first got it it made some crackling noises that tightening the chassis( a bit loose after shipping) solved. The I noticed the feedback and Myles suggested an EF-86 change and I put that Mullard that KCA sells into it. Not the problem. Still had some spittng noises..pulled the v1 and replaced...solved that. Still fedback. Changedged the PI and that did it..at least at home. I have an old RCA in there..If I lean the amp back toward the wall I can make the feedback happen. This last gig I was a good bit away from the wall but....same thing..Sorry if I rambled ...I appreciate your help. Mybe its a power tube?

Man, thats weird. I would eliminate each tube as a culprit. It could be your power tubes, it sould still be the phase inverter you changed out. I would change out your power tubes and see if the feedback stops. If not, change out your phase inverter for a GT SAG-AX7-MPI and see if that helps. For power tubes the GT EL84S #6 are great. Hope this helps.

You said "spitting" sound? That doesn't sound like feedback. Go straight in with one guitar and one cord, then switch cords, might be your cord. Try different guitars too. An amp with that much gain can really show every weakness that comes into it.

I took care of the spitting when I replaced the v1 tube. Quiet as as mouse except for that feedback..

Frank....Look hard at the EF-86..Here's why. I have a Z/28 head, my EF-86 had a cracked bottle when I got it so a NOS GEC from KCNOS went in. Great amp, no issues, I grabbed a 1x12 combo cab and put the Z/28 in it along with a V'30, when I get the amp cookin' it'll go into this strange feedback !!! Put the chassis back in the head cab..no feedback, EF-86's are fragile tubes, Doc really prefers heads with this tube and the feedback is one reason for this, all that air moving around beats up the EF-86.

You know amp tech here in Memphis told me the same thing..Combo could be tough on that tube..I have a new Mullard in there right now...Doesn't do it at home...I was thinking it could be a stage vibration shaking it up..I'll check it again but at 68.00 bucks a pop I hope you're not right.

Makes all the dif with mine combo VS head, it's like they go microphonic with the vibration and/or air moving around them (EF-86). Don't know how to tell you to check it, but it sounds exactly like what I've had happen. I have emailed back and forth about EF-86 amps, My question at the time was "Why no Route 66 combo" That's when Z said he prefers to use them in heads 'cause "there's so much air moving in those combo cabs..." I think Lefty has some info on this as well. Call or email the Doc. Curt

Follow up. Well my v1 tube had gone very microphonic. Guess I didn't realize it since I had already changed it. Mike at KCA helped me figure out. Most people seemed to think it was the ef86. I feel pretty dumb, I should not have assumed...I'll post what happens on the next gig...think I have it figured out. Thanks for all your help...please let me stay... Frank
