I have a chance to get a Prescription Head. I am looking for something with a little more clean headroom than my Maz Jr. can offer. Will one of the older Prescriptions do that (not an ES)? I'm wondering if I really just need a Maz Sr. Thanks guys!

I Love my old prescription...LOUD, and great amount of clean headroom but if you liked the JR I'd go with the Senior..... can't go wrong with the senior in my opinion also, you might consider the stingray/ mantaray...THAT amp has some beeeutiful cleans and great headroom... maybe the perfect volume too, more than a JR but not quite as much as a SR... and You can absolutley get the big tone, low input, max out the master volume for an non master amp MAZ SR thing goin with a stingray.... BUT YOU HAVE A CHANCE TO GET AN OLD RX..... SO If that OLD prescription is in good condition for a good price I'd jump on it and it'll do it for you BUT you might need an airbreak... I'd also want to play it 1st if you've never played one... other wise I'd go with the more familiar sound you already like I set my RX ES to sound like / mimic my OLD RX..... use the low input on the RX ES w/ NO OVERDOSE... I just love that ORIGINAL's sound....the RX / RX ES DOES have it's sound... answer to your question is YES it has more clean headroom... about 45 watts more (mine sounds like a 50 watt head easy and roars)... it doesn't distort NEARLY as much as my RX ES... I can run my original to about 7 ( 2:00) with EXPAND AND BRIGHT on and it has HAIR on it but is still relatively clean and LOUD!!!! airbreak..... hope it helps... I don't think I'll ever get rid of my old RX.... I like the SR alot and I like the stingray... any of those could be your main amp.... Jason

The old Rx does have a lot of clean headroom. I have both the Maz 18 and the Rx, and the Rx is a much louder amp. I plug in to the low input, and rarely have to turn it up past 10:00. At about halfway up it starts to get a hint of hair, but only when playing hard. (This is with humbuckers - single coils will be a different story.)
However, it doesn't sound like my Maz. It is a whole diferent amp. Having had the Maz first, it took a while for me to get used to the Rx, and how it works. I didn't use it very much the first couple of years I owned it.

Hey Squeallydan, either Prescription amps will give you alot of headroom. With the RXES it starts to get a little gritty around the 11:00-12:00 position when plugged in to the high input with the overdose off. It is not distorting but can have a bit of hair depending how hard you are hitting the strings. Really dynamic. It also is really loud at this volume. Having played the mazjr. as well the RXES, the RXES has more volume and headroom by a long shot. Plugging into the low input will give you even more headroom. I feel the RXES sounds a bit more open and has an immediacy to the attack which has alot to do with the ef86 preamp tube in the signal path and the simpler circuitry. I feel that the mazjr/sr have a slight sompression to their sound. I really dig that aspect about the MAZsr, the same way I dig the openess of the RXES. I too will get a MAZ38 oneday but I am loving my stingray at the moment. I feel you can get those distorted tones at a more reasonable volume with the maz38 due to the master volume, than the RXES, but they both have great clean headroom. It comes down to which sound you prefer. I think you should get both! ;D

I think I'm going to try a Maz Sr. first since I know I like the sound of the Maz Jr.
