It makes a difference ! I just related this story in a response on another thread but thought it was worth repeating here. I have a Stang Ray that I've owned for about a year or so that I had bought used, so I don't really know how much use it had seen prior to my owning it. I gig almost every weekend so I've been through a couple power tube changes. Although I replaced the power tubes pretty recently, I noticed at a recent gig that the low end was kind of mushy. I had seen and read Myles' comments that the phase inverter is probably the hardest worked tube in your amp and that he changes it every other power tube change. So I spent $14 and got a new one, and the amp is much more detailed sounding; it resolved that mushiness. I think a lot of people get hung up on power tube changes, swapping preamp tubes and even replacing the rectifier with a NOS one, but you don't see much talk about the poor ol' PI. It really makes a difference.

You are so right, Ignatius!
After reading Myles' info on PI's I started swapping my MAZ PI with this and that. You can really hear a difference between various types (12ax, 5751, 12au, etc.).
It's a cheap way to "bend" the amp into another tone zone.
Peace, Eddie

Would an NOS tube last longer in a PI slot than a new production tube would?
Just curious.

Yeah. I have been using Brimar CV4004 tubes and love their tone. Just wondering how long they may last. Maybe a few thousand hours or so....who knows. Just curiosity.
