Does anyone use or tried a Tone tubby hempcone ceramic speaker with a Carmen Ghia? I'm in a bit of a dilema right now deciding which speaker to match with a Ghia head. Not too keen on a stock V30 and want to get away from a Celestion greenback.
I'm basically looking for the best of both worlds,a little bit of Marshall 18 watt tone but the fatness of a Fender that you'd hear in say an old Vibrolux.
Does such a speaker exist? Love the Weber silver bell, blue dog combination in my maz 38 but what single speaker would achieve that with a little more rounder tone?
Your thoughts and experiences are greatly appreciated.

I do not like Tone Tubbys in lower powered amps. I personally find them way too stiff ... almost like a speaker that never seems to ever break in. Sitting behind a Marshall 100 watter cranked they are acceptable for me if there are no greenback cabs around and I am in a bind.
This is just my personal take though.
On the Carmen Ghia I love things like Greenbacks or Vox Blues or the Weber Alnico stuff.

Thanks for all your coments both positive and negative about the Tone Tubbies. I ctually emailed Dr Z the other day and asked if the alnico and ceramic Tone tubbies would be a good match for the Ghia and he said that the alnico would work just fine. On that advice i went ahead and bought an anico speaker. I considered a 25 watt greenback butin the end didn't want my tone to be a total British sound and i am not all that keen on the inherent qualities(cone cry) of a single greenback anyhow. I find that they are great in a quad box being pushed by an old Marshall but other that that don't really do it for me. I considered some of the Eminence models like the Tonker but couldn't find anyone that was willing to send one to me for the right price here in Australia so i decided on a Tone Tubby.
I've never heard them, don't know much about them other than the rave reviews they have been getting. I'm sure they won't sound like a vintage speaker, heck they are made from hemp, that has to affect tone somehow but if we all stuck to tradition we would still be playing old Fenders,Vox's and Marshalls that break down and Dr Z amps would not exist.
It's going to be an expensive mistake if they do sound like crap but I have taken a chance. I keep you all updated when the speaker arrives and I test drive it.
What are you all using to drive the front end of your Ghia's with. I have a Fulltone FD2 but I am considering either a Fulltone fat boost or Keeley katana. If either darkens the tone too much I will just use it with my Maz 38 that has a very bright tone to it. For psychadelic stuff and late 60's Fuzz tones I'm also considering a Keeley java boost. I find it hard to live without reverb and I have just discovered a little box called a Reverbamate. Analogman has them for sale on his site. I think its actually a small spring reverb unit and not a digital/analog simulator like the EH Holy Grail.
Has anyone tried any of these products through the Ghia? I must admit I really tend to favour old school construction and I am not really one for digital effects.

The reverbamate is made for two channel amps like the vintage Fender stuff. I talked to Analogman about it and he didn't recommend it for one channel amps. I have a Fender '63 Reverb unit I use the with Ghia and it sounds great. But I really don't use it much with the Ghia because I like the Ghia without verb.
I have a Keeley Java Boost. It is a great pedal. I am not sure what you mean about psychadelic? I use it for traditional blues and it does a great job. At high gain settings it does get a little bit of a fuzzy overtone but not a lot. (Think stones satifcation sort of fuzz but lighter.)
Give us a review of that speaker. I have a Red Fang in mine and I like the way it sounds.

When I said Psychadelic I was refering to later Hendrix acid type sounds like Fuzz face tones.

I have a Fulltone Fatboost and while I really like it with my Fender amps I can't seem to get it dialed in to a tone I like on the Ghia. I also have an OCD that seems to be a much better fit. There is another thread active that is discussing the merits of a treble boost Rangemaster style pedal (like the Java Boost that Straightblues refers to) with the Ghia and it appears as if it is a great fit.

Dern.......I already have a Fulltone FD2 and keep scouring Ebay for 2nd hand Java Boosts. Im not sure if others would agree with me but the Ghia is a pretty dark type of amp unlike something like a Fender Vibroking or Vibrolux for that matter. Adding the Fatboost probably wouldn't suit it. Something like an RC booster(heaps of tonal possibilities),a Keeley katana or even a treble booster like the Java on the other hand is a different story. I know it's often said, "tone is a subjective thing" but match the right pedal with the right guitar/amp/speaker combination and youve found" Tone Nirvana". Unfortunately most of us on here as well as 90% of guitar playing G.A.S.aholics would agree, finding that holy grail of tone is a never ending quest. AMPAHOLIC I am now trying to justify spending the dollars on a overdrive/boost/distortion pedal when I already own a really good one. The FD2 sounds great in Vintage and FM mode on my Maz Sr with a Strat or Tele where the front end of the amp is set to (MasterVolume maxed out ,Volume set to taste). You're not really helping my G.A.S by telling me the JAVA sounds really good. I had my reservations about this pedal as I already owned a germanium based fuzz (Fulltone Soulbender) that just didn't reall do it for me. I wasn't really keen on any of the soundclips of the Fulltone 69' (I hate to judge simply by those) another germanium type fuzz by Fulltone either but in saying that absolutely love my FD2. What I've heard of the Java Boost is another story. The pedal by nature is a treble booster so by its nature it seems to bring a bit of added sparkle to an already great amp. I does colour your sound but hey its meant to but all in all it sounds great with certain amps. Oh well looks like I'm getting another stomp box ;D "KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD"

Groover, check out Dave Ulbrick's stuff from Melbourne if you get a chance, his pedals are serious quality, as are his amps and speaker boxes. I'm pretty sure he has a great germanium boost called a JB pedal that he initially made in the 70's. It's really called the Bejesus pedal but obviously he couldn't really call it that. He has a great range of other stuff too. Comparable to anything anywhere.

Not a problem, thanks for the tip Tas....
I guess you just worked out what my latest acquisition is then. Couldn't help myself, had to get a second Z' I still want the big sound though so I'll be keeping an eye on what comes up on the Bay' with regards to KT45. That amp just sounds huge!!!
Wish I had the dollars for a Stingray as well but for now the Maz Sr Ghia combo should do the trick for all purpose Rock/Blues stuff.

groovergeorge - I'm thinking about letting my Java Boost go... PM or E-mail me if you're interested. I'll give you a fair price. By the way, reason I'm letting it go isn't because I don't like it... it's because I've had a germanium tri-boost kit from byoc.com sitting in a drawer for the past 3 months and I want to give myself a reason to get it built already!
