Just took delivery on my 2nd Z, a Z28 to keep my MAZ 18JR company... They are both 2X10 combos. 18 has Eminence Legends, 28 has Weber ALNICOs. Here's the question: Seems like the 28 starts to get hair w/ the volume open about a third of the way- oh, yeah- it has JJ power tubes, a JAN12AX7 in V-2, JJ rec, and an NOS Amprex EF86 in V-1. I was playing a Duesenberg Starplayer TV. Does that sound about par for the course? Thanks! Mark

perhaps could be partly due to the speakers. you could also lower the gain factor on the tube. mine is pretty much stock with the exception of a RedFang and a NOS rectifier. stays clean with my strat till a tad over noon. a bit less with my LP. gets toothy at 3pm and by upping the bass treb it gets real snarly. Only gets more from there till dimed... YMMV of course

Hey, thanks for the tips- lower gain V-1 or V-2? As far as speakers, I am going to a/b between the speakers in the MAZ tomorrow. In the end, I may leave it alone, this 28 has some real sweet tone as is!

Have you swapped the 12AX7 in V2 out for a 5751 yet? That will calm things down a bit as well.

If I set my bass and treble at about 11 o'clock I can turn the volume up to 4 o'clock and only just be getting clipping. It's mostly in the tone controls. That's with a strat. And yes the 5751 is the tube for V2. Brett
