How loud is the Z28 through an average 1x12?
Is it possible to get some good natural break-up/overdrive from it without bursting your eardrums, or is an attenuator necessary for this?
It will be used at home (a good sized room), rehearsal spaces and small to medium sized indoor venues.
And if it is a bit too loud, is it possible to use a less powerful rectifier, like a 5V4 or 5U4 instead of the stock 5AR4, or will this screw things up? (maybe the amp is to be used only with the 5AR4?)

you can also use a less efficient speaker. I dont know the db level on this but its plenty loud enough for med sized rooms. by using the treb/bass knobs you can get it to break up sooner, they act like gain controls past noon, turn the volume down some and up the bass/treb...you can get it to break up sooner. I don;t have a set in stone setting for mine as it sounds great all over the place but I seem to be using bass 1pm......treb 2-3pm and volume at 1pm, then I micro adjust from there if too much of one thing or the other... I have not messed with a different rectifier but did install a NOS mullard. these amps sound so good all over the dials that its hard to come up with the "right setup". you can of course use the ever popular and used 3-3-3 enjoy the amp, its a great one.

I use mine through a 1x12 Z cab (older version), with a Celestion Gold... I get plenty of bass, and very nice breakup.
My settings seem to always go back to Vol 12 / Treb 11:30 / Bass 11:30

22W is misleading. It seems to have a lot of power for a 22W 6v6. Having said that, your cabinet style (open / closed / size / shape / etc.) and speaker efficiency have a ton to do with the perceived loudness. Ie. An open back G12H30 will be a ton louder than a closed back Greenback.

By yourself it will seam quite loud. in a very controled duo set up it will seam loud, but with a band it's a great volume. You'll sound like a band.

It's can be loud, but the speaker and cab does make a difference. Also, I'm not crazy about using an attenuator with it. My EL84's love it, but the 6V6's don't.

I run my Z28 through a fairly inefficient 1x12 (green or weber alnico sig12s) but for home use I still need a hotplate. As long as I don't click below -8 db on the hotplate, it still sounds decent. When I play at the local pub with a band, the hotplate is often unneccessary unless I'm trying to blend with amplified acoustic instruments.
I do run a 5V4 in the rectifier. I tried a 5U4GB for a while but it was too saggy. I like the sag/punch ratio with the 5V4. Just be sure to rebias if you try this.

Be aware many 5V4's are mislabelled 5AR4's, so the voltage will be the same Brett

I didn't care for my Z-28 with a Weber Micro-Mass. At the same time I had issues with likeable tone out of less efficient speakers like Weber models that performed great in other amps.

(maybe the amp is to be used only with the 5AR4?) I've decided to give answering this another shot: 1. The cab / speaker combo will play a large part in how loud it is. 2. For my purposes, at home use does require attenuation. I'm not happy about that, but if you like to ramp up the tone stacks then it's almost required in my situation. 3. I don't have any experience changing the rectifier, but the Doc commented on how to get earlier breakup. drzamplifiers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=z28&action=display&thread=19841
