I was playing my RX Jr at lunch today and had both the master and vol cranked. I'm using an older set of Ei 84's that have always has a sweetness that I've never found in any other EL84. I strummed a g chord and got a nasty high pitched squeal. I immediately hit the standby and visually checked the tubes and they all looked like they were glowing normally. I turned the amp MV and V down and took it off of standby. The tone was back normal, but then the volume would drop and come right back. I looked at the EL84's and as I lightly strummed the volume would drop again, you could see that the voltage drop would nearly cut all glow in the 84's. I shut it down again and swapped out for some GT's. The amp seems to be acting normally, but tonally it is brighter, less chimey, almost ratty sounding if pushed. What should I be checking?

My MAZ did the same thing. A power tube swap did the trick. I used TAD's this time. They sound great, and seem to be impressing people with their reliability. Before the TAD's I had gone through two sets of JJ's.

I see that Doug's Tubes still has Ei's, may have to put in an order. I had an old set of Phillips EL84's from the early 60's and the Ei's are identical in construction and tone. I've used the TAD's in the past and may get a set of those as well.

Ei's are very unreliable and this is a common issue. Grab a new set and have a backup set.
