Well, that's just sad. 56 is way too young.

Well, I got my Mini in today and the preamp tube was bad right off the bat, it was crackling. So I swapped it out for a known good Ruby 12AX7 and it cleared right up. But, I need that one for my other amp. What should I get to replace it? It came with a Svetlana, is that the usual? The amp is pretty surprising for the tone it gets, pretty loud, too, though it ain't gonna scare my 100 watt plexi reissue.

I have a Mini & when I bought mine it had a GT 12ax7m in it. I haven't had very good luck with the GT12ax7m tube. All of the ones I had went microphonic very quickly. I have used some of the new Svets in both my Mini & my SRZ & they seem good for new production tubes. I have been on a NOS tube buying binge over the last few weeks & I must admit NOS tubes are much better. My Mini has an RFT in it which I really like. You might want to try a damper in your Mini. It really made a difference in mine. There is some discussion on dampers in the following thread. drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=tubes&action=display&thread=1121488384

I have a GT12AX7M in mine and it has worked great for me. It shipped with a JJ (83, I think), but that seemed a little "congested" to me.

I think I might try some of those dampers on my Lonestar. It has a rattle that drives me nuts, and I can't figger out where it's coming from. I do need to retension the rectifier tube socket, too. One time it was sounding kinda sick, I looked in the back and the rec tube was laying in the bottom of the cab! On the GT Mullards, I've tried those before and they weren't too reliable, don't think I'll be buying any of those again.

tried a/b'd a Svetlana and a GT12AX7M in a friends Mini... we both agreed that we liked the GT12AX7M much much better.

how much can a bad tube cause crackle? I got a used Mini and I get a lot of fuzzy like noise. I think the speaker is broken. How much crackle can a bad tube cause?

Depends on when it's doing it as to where it's coming from, I think. Mine was crackling without playing anything, is yours the same way? I'm getting a small amount of rattle, too. (when I turn it up loud and play chords) Don't know if it's tube rattle or bad speaker. Need to try a different speaker and see what happens. I did have a rattle in my Lonestar that I may have fixed yesterday by tightening up the tube pin inserts.

It really only happens when I hit the strings with any decent force. I have rattle from my KT-45, but thats because its a combo (1 of 2 ever made or will be made by the Dr.). The amp was not designed to be upside down, suspending the tubes, so some tubes needed a little carriage to hold them in, but at any decently loud volume the springs holding the tube on rattle against the tube. I'm still trying to figure a way to get rid of the rattle. My tech emailed Z and his response was "Well, with such a powerful amp, you should expect some rattle"

I replaced mine with a TungSol hi-gain 12AX7, it's killer!! Hey Weezee, was yours a Svetlana? Was it bad, or did you just want to try something different? Nothing was wrong with the JJ that came in it, but I wanted more distortion at lower volume. I chose the TungSol because it was listed as hi-gain, so I decided to give it a try. It sound just as I expected it to.
