Hi all,
I've had my Maz 38 Snr 1x12 for coming up to a year, and it's seen some pretty heavy usage so I thought I'd get some new power valves. This seems simple, as I just need a matched quad of my favourite brand's EL-84s.
I thought I'd pick up some spare pre-amp valves too, but have been confused by the information on the Z site, which lists the preamp valves as:
1-GT12AX7S 1-GT12AX7S 1- GT12AT7C 1-GT12AX7R1 1-GT 12AT7 NOS 1- 5AR4
1. Am I correct in assuming the 5AR4 is the recitfier valve? If so, should this be replaces along with the other pre-amp valves? Do rectifier valves typically last longer or shorter than pre-amp valves?
2. There seems to be 4 different types of 12A* valves there. For best performance should they be replaced like for like, or could I put 5 x 12AX7s in the Maz?
Apologies for the newbie questions, but I thought it was as simple as "EL84 for power, 12AX7 for pre", but I'm not so sure now....
Thanks in advance Jordan

Hey Jordan. I got this list from the Doc but I don't have a date on it so I'm not sure if it's been updated since. I have V5=12AX7LPS, V4=12AX7WB, V3=12AT7 (balanced), then V1 and V2 Tesla 12AX7. V1 is your tone shaper so you can change that one with a NOS tube, or 5751 for more headroom. There is plenty of information at kcanostubes.com/content/Default.asp to see what you could try. Have fun. "a" Steve also, it would be a good idea to get a NOS rectifier because you never know when the one you have could go out. The Doc puts good ones in there when they ship but they are glass and subject to the elements. A good rectifier will last forever.

Thanks for the reply Steve. So, it sounds like in answer to my questions: 1. 12AX7 and 12AT7 are interchangeable (I just did some reading online and found that 12AT7s are around 60-70% of the gain of a 12AX7), so theoretically a full set of 12AX7s would be fine. 2. Rectifier valves should last a long long time (I was unaware of that), but it's always handy to have a spare one Thanks again Jordan
