Forgive the off-Z question but I know there is alot of collective wisdom about tweeds on this forum so I'll ask. I have a 56 Fender Harvard professionally recapped and original Jenson though I have a Webber in to save wear on the old cone. A few buzzes here and there but unbelieveable tone for blues, oily three dimensional leads and incredible pick response. I would like a little more clean headroom. Can anyone recommend a different PI and or Rectifyier that would help without compromising the truely vintage sweet tone? And obviously I don't want to make changes that will place added stress on the transformer. Here is the current tube line up. V1: 6AT6 ; V2: old RCA 12AX7; V3 and V4: 2x 1965 RCA 6V6; V5: original Sylvania 5Y3 rectifier. This amp was designed as a fixed biased amp. Any thoughts? (If Myles is on this board perhaps he could weigh in). Thanks.

An inexpensive way to get more headroom would be to put a 5751 in V1, that is what I do to my amps, but that may be toying with your sweetness. I'm sure you'll be getting more opinions here soon! Sounds like a sweet amp

Thanks guys. and Smolder, Those web pages are handy. I am going to try a 5751 or a 12AT7 in V2 and see where that gets me.

+1 on using a 5751.
12AT7's sound very different, but YMMV
I have a 5751 in my tweed champ clone.
In my Tweed bassman clone, I have
V1 Nos RCA 12AY7 (6072) V2 Nos Telefunken 12ax7 V3 Nos GE 5751

First off you cannot use a 5751 or whatever in V1. The 6AT6 is what was designed and is a very different tube and not a dual triode. These amps are sweet and are what they are. They may seem similar to some other tweed amps like a tweed deluxe but are different amps.
Use the proper tubes ... and as far as headroom, all you can really do is make sure the V2 tube and output tubes are of proper spec. Don't change V2 away from a 12AX7 in the hope of more clean headroom as other aspects will suffer from a tone standpoint. DO NOT use a 12AT7 there as it will run way too hot and cause other issues long term.

Thank you Myles. Was hopingi you would weigh in. I certainly would not mess with the 6AT6 and I called Mike at KCA tubes and recieved a response simlar to yours. I did try an NOS 5171 as a PI and it sounds good but about the same as the 12ax7. I can certainly live with the tone I am getting out of the amp now so I will leave well enough alone.
