Well, I think I am somewhat educated on most commonly used tubes, with the exception of the EF86. I am about to get one for my Ray, but I am not sure what brands or idiosyncracies are desireable and what should be avoided. Can anyone out there in Z land give me a heads up concerning what to look for? Thanks in advance, Lee

Anything NOS will be better than new production. I have a dario miniwatt for my rxjr that's great. I currently have a tesla in there that's great- it's a little darker, but it still sounds great. The Tesla was only $30 (I think) from Dougstubes.com. Another great vendor is KCAnostubes.com. Like I said, you can't go wrong with NOS. Fortunately, ef86's are still relatively cheap when compared to a 12ax7. Well, except for Telefunken and Amperex, all the audiophile guys really like those. Anyways, good luck.

I also bought a tesla ef86 from Doug's tubes, and have a Dario Miniwatt that came stock with my Z28. The tesla sounds great, but to my ears it was a touch brighter in my Z28 than the Dario. Different amps and different ears. I also have some Sovtek ef86's for back up which seem a bit bland compared to the other two. Try KCA Tubes for a good selection of nos. www.kcanostubes.com/content/And Dougstubes for great tubes at great prices. www.dougstubes.com/?gclid=CImjwbLQvpoCFQVaFQodrl6NqwI ordered a quad of SED =C= el34's from dougtubes for my Traynor YGL3, not only the best price for them on the net that I've found, but they came in very well matched up.
