I have heard these sound good in the Route 66. My question is how does Kanos (or anyone) know that these are mislabeled and if they are mislabled how does anyone know that they are proper spec for 5AR4? Anyone use this in the Route 66? How does it compare to the new preference for 5Au? Thanks.

Folks like KCA NOS and Myles have very sophisticated test equipment that they use to determine the specs on tubes.

After 5 years of owning my Mazerati, I finally switched to a NOS recto. I now have a better sounding amp. The specs of the NOS recto allow the amp to deliver the proper voltages, in spades.

DC here! I use the the misslabeled rec bought it from KCA Nos. Mike is a extremely knowledgable, killer guitartech and player too I've heard Myles say. You can check my soundclips of my Route66 here: mbsb.psy.umu.se/clips/clips.htmlScroll down to the red section - there is a table showing off various soundclips from my Route with different tube complements. The power tubes are the same in all clips. A matched pair of NOS GEC KT66 or rather the military version CV1075. The clips were recorded on my HP Laptop with the MOTU 828-MKII firewire soundcard into Soundforge. The mike used was an AKG CS-5300 condenser. Cheers: Dixiechicken!

You can tell by the look of them. The physical plate structure of a 5AR4 is very different from that which is on the label. I have one in my 6545 and it does great. All the specas are out there and good tube vendors have the spec sheets. So one you can see the difference and the specs are published for all to read. As for new versus NOS.....NOS all the way. Modern tubes are not manufactured to the strict tolerances that were used in the past.

Thanks to all. Mike recommended the Phillips NOS. I ordered one and am looking forward to it in the R66.

Got one of these from Mike, put it nto a MAZ 18, wow! Was not expecting to hear much of an audible difference, but was pleasently surprised.

Thanks to all. Mike recommended the Phillips NOS. I ordered one and am looking forward to it in the R66. I purchased one awhile back and have had no problems with the rectifier. If you want earlier breakup try an RCA 5R4-GYB. I've been using one since April and have never been happier with my tone.

Been using them in the following amps for some time, with no effect other than they made each amp sound tremendously better versus current manufacture:
Blackface Pro Reverb Carr Slant 6V Tone King Meteor
I chose a GE 5AR4 with copper supports for my Maz 18, for some reason I thought that sounded a little better, but it's probably a wash. The Philips worked fine in there.
Anyway, no need to fear the Philips, it's really a 5AR4 in 5V4GA's clothing, and you'll hear a wonderful improvement versus Sovteks and the like. The proverbial blanket comes off.

I just popped one of these into my Maz and it wasn't just a little bit of improvement it was huge. As it's been stated the proverbial "blanket" came off. It was warmer, tighter, thicker, with tons of chime, much more than before with the Ruby 5ar4.
