Hi,
I'm wondering if the NOS Mullard EL84s are really that good, one good NOS alternative I'm aware of are the GE EL84s at half the price, any opinions? The thing is the Mullards are almost extinct, is it all down hill from here?
Thanks, Mody

Hi mody, if you get NOS tubes you need to get them at a certain strength- like from someone like dougstubes. Case in point: I bought two pairs of matched Amperex EL84s which are supposed to be up there with the best. Now, the tone is incredibly sweet and detailed, but the tubes overdrive very early and there isn't a lot of clean volume. Much less clean volume than my GT EL84s's #6. If you get onto a company like www.kcanostubes.com or www.dougstubes.com they'll test for a certain strength- early overdrive, medium, late overdrive. I'm not sure how India goes, mody- kca wouldn't mail to me in Australia. Regards Brett
