A few questions from a newbie.. I just bought a Mazerati head from Peach in Essex (apprently the only UK shop to sell Dr Z!). I'm going to need a cab for it, but I'm also going to have a to have a couple of chats with Mr Bank Manager before I'm going to be able to afford something nice! Until then I'm going to try and use my Marshall JCM600 combo as a cab, as the internal speakers are unpluggable. Two 8ohm speakers wired together means I should use the 16ohm output on the Mazerati, right? I've got PA speakers and have wondered about using one. Is this a very bad idea? The guy in the shop recommended a Dr Z 2x10 cab, but I'm probably not going to be able to get one due to cost and availability. Any ideas what else would be worth looking at. Many thanks for the help....

I just recently bought a Jdesign 112 open back cab. My rati sits perfectly on top and the cab sounds fantastic. I put a Eminence V12 in there and I have a total of $250 invested. Very nice cabs and you can check them out at jdesigncabs.com if you like. Hope this help!

looks perfect! Only problem is that I'm in the UK, where it seems to be much harder to find quality stuff at reasonable prices....

Well, I can't help with any UK-specific cab sources, but I will say that the JDesign cabs are very nice. I ordered one to use as a satellite cab with my Mazerati combo - look/sounds great and was priced very reasonably. Also, with two 8ohm speakers, depending on how they're wired, you'll either end up with a 16 ohm or 4 ohm load. You should definitely determine which it is because it's not good to run a 16 ohm load off the 4 ohm tap (or vice versa). In regards to the PA speaker, as long as you match the impedence you're not going to hurt anything, but you can be pretty sure it won't sound very good. Tube guitar amps are not made to go through full range speakers.

Well, as I've mentioned elsewhere, I've bought a cab with a 15" eminence big ben speaker. It's made by a little company called cabtex here in the uk. Handmade from pine, with dovetail joints. Rather lovely, although not cheap. Bought from the Guitar Gallery in Oxford who have a great selection and are very helpful: www.oxfordguitargallery.com/I took my Mazerati in and tried it with various cabs, a 210, and a couple of 112s. The 210 was far too bright and brittle for my liking. The 112s varied a bit, there was a nice one, but it was a hardwood, uncovered cabinet which would have got battered far too easily. It was interesting to note how much the headroom varied with different cabs. With the 110, it was starting to break up a bit at about 9 o'clock, the 112s broke up about 10 o'clock. The 115 doesn't break up until about 12, and has this huge warm clean sound. I wanted lots of clean headroom so it's perfect for me.

neil - See if you can find a Johnson J212V or J212C cabinet over there. These are among the best built and best sounding cabs on the market. And they sell for a very fair price. www.johnson-amp.com/cabinets.htm

JDesign is excellent. i've got 2 cabs (one off the shelf and a custom made one) from Jeff and very happy with them.

Got to give my new rig a proper run last night, and I'm really pleased! I'm surprised more people don't use 15" speakers. It's not lacking in top end and gives more scope. With the mazerati, the tone control is incredibly useful and well voiced - no matter where I adjust it to, the sound is always useable. I would really stuggle to get a bad sound out of it. If I turn the Mazerati tone right up (ie, max bass, minimum top end) it gives a massive filthy sound that sounds beautiful with powerchords. The only problem is that it steals the bass player's frequencies... ;D The rig also responds incredibly well to any adjustments in the guitar's volume and tone, and to my picking. If I really dig into the strings it's almost like I've stepped on an overdrive pedal, back off the picking and the lovely cleans shine through. I can see why people with good quality amps tend to have less pedals - you don't need so many. It's certainly a world away from my old marshall jcm600....

Well I have a Truetonecustom.com 1x12 with a removable panel to switch between open and closed. I've been playing closed back for about a year now and recently opened the back up.
Wow, the amp now has a lot more bass AND top end chime and spank.
So I would say keep the cab open in the back.
