Hi People,
Question. Do new Ghias sound different than older versions? I know that the new ones come with a 4 and 8 ohm tap versus the older ones just having an 8 ohm connection. I recall reading somewhere that output transformers without a tapped secondary will sound better than an OT with a 4, 8 and 16 ohm tap. The rationale being that the straight up 8 ohm tranny has more windings on the secondary of the transformer. Has anybody ever A/B'd an old Ghia witha new one?

Yes, and I'm a little biased, but I've always felt mine has a certain mojo that none of the 5 other ones I've played had... it's probably just the green tolex though. Seriously, Dr. Z has some of the best QC in the business... I'm sure an amp never leaves the shop unless it sounds as good as all the others before it. If anything, updates here and there are only for the better I'm sure. No two amplifiers are ever exactly the same (part of the beauty of handwired tube amps), but I'd be willing to bet that Dr. Z's are just about the most consistently awesome amps on the planet.

I'd say you are a good and loyal customer! To be honest I do not yet have a Z but I am convinced that the Ghia is what I need to have. I have typically been a vintage Fender guy but my reserach is suggesting that there is more out there. Thanks for the endorsement that i'm on the right track!

There is now way you could go wrong with a Ghia. I don't care how new or old they are. I have the older one with only the 8ohm output and it is awesome.

Bob - to my knowledge there is only one other green Z amp out there.... there may well be more, but the one I saw was on eBay about a year ago. For the life of me though, I can't remember if it was a Maz 18 or a Ghia... I'm pretty sure it was a head, and it definitely had Vox grillcloth on it. I've been wishing I would have bought that amp ever since~! FWIW, you could recover a Ghia or any other Z amp with that green levant tolex if you were so inclined... it's available at mojotone HERE: www.mojomusicalsupply.com/cgi-bin/mojotone/7310500g.htmlHollywood5150 said it best - they are ALL awesome!
