Howdy,
I changed out the "lousy old" stock preamp & rectifier tubes on my new Carmen Ghia as soon as possible. Out went the factory NOS 5751, NOS Sylvania 5Y3 and JJ 12ax7. I replaced them with a Raytheon 12ax7, a JAN Philips 5751 and a Mazda 5Y3 rectifier. My wife and I both noticed a change in my tone: less treble and less bass than with the original factory tubes! I put the stock factory tubes back into my Ghia and went back to riffing away Keef-style with my open G-tuned Rickenbacker and it sounded fantastic again. Dr. Z knows his tubes! I'll keep my NOS "upgrade" tubes as spares. Anyone else prefer thier Z's with stock tubes?
