Well Ive recently been turned onto the great peter green. He is quicly becoming one of my favorite guitarist....even surpassing my love for Hendrix/Clapton gasp:o Ive already got a Route 66 and a strat. Ill be purchasing a Gibson les Paul Traditional tomorrow.
I guess my question is will a Z28 give me better PG tones then a route 66. I have a Vanamps reverbamate. What do you guys think? I plug a les paul into a 65 deluxe reverb RI and i loved the sounds. I was thinking maybe a deluxe reverb clone. Or am i fine w/ the 66?

You'll find them in either one...
To get the REAL PG sound, flip the magnet and turn the neck pup.

That would be the out-of-phase PG mod. Just turn your neck pup 180 degrees....Instant P.G. I don't care for it.....makes a killer LP sound honky to me. I LOVE the sound of a good LP neck/neck-bridge. You can achieve the same thing w/a push/pull pot(ala Page), and have more options. JMO/FWIW....etc.... edit: Bluzman corrected me on this....he sez; "You gotta flip the magnet also".....He's purty smart, so..... I still don't like it tho..

I'm a huge Peter Green fan as well...
All it takes is one listen to "Supernatural" from Mayall's "A Hard Road" and you'll be an instant PG fan....
IMO Peter Green is all about feeling, technique, and soul... he played through Orange amps, Dual Showmans, Twin Reberbs, Marshalls... it didn't matter. His tone is in his hands.
T-Rock & Paul are right about the infamous PG mod. You've go to take apart your neck PU and rotate the magnet 180 degrees. It's a cool phasey sound but I'm with T-Rock; it's not for me.
If I were to say what my most "Peter Green" Z amp is, it's my Grosh Set Neck into the EZG-50 into my Z 4x10 with the reverb cranked (for the Supernatural sounds).

If you like Peter Green look into Fleetwood Mac's early stuff. I purchased a "used" CD (no longer in print) that is labelled something like PG's Fleetwood Mac - double cd. Has some great stuff including his version of Black Magic Woman (which he wrote btw). As for tone Bare Knuckle Pick-ups make a set of PG pickups that sound amazing. They actually had his guitar (which I believe Gary Moore still owns) and used that to copy the tone for their pickups. I'm having them put into a "59" LP I'm having made. Here's a pic of the guitar (unfortunately a cell phone pic ) [a href=" "] [/a]

BTW - Peter Green is still alive however rumor has it that due to massive consumption of LSD during the 60's he has spent his life in various institutions for schizophrenia. Rumor has it that he is presently out and starting to play guitar again.

He's been playing for some years with Splinter. From what I've read his bi-polar condition may not have been helped by drugs but I gather it's mostly natural. When I saw PG in late '69 or 'early 70, he and Danny were both using standard silver Fender Dual Showman Reverbs with JBLs. This was right before the master volumes were introduced. They cranked them all the way up and stood very close to the amps, for feedback and sustain I guess. I think on the Blues Jam In Chicago he used a silver Twin Reverb. If you listen to the Then Play On album, my fave, it sounds like Twin Reverbs with JBLs to me and their Les Pauls. If you use a JBL D130 or clone with a Z28 you can get pretty good PG tone and your Reverb is an excellent reverb pedal. The EZG50 with a JBL would nail that sound but you'll want an attenuator too.
