I just made the switch from a Maz 38 to a Mazerati and I'm having a lot of trouble adjusting. I always heard that the rati was loud, but I figured the Brake Lite would do the trick. It just doesn't seem to be enough. At church, I'm running the rati around 8:30 with 2 steps of attenuation, and it's still too loud. I'm noticing a pretty substantial difference in tone from 2 to 3 on the BL, so I don't really want any more attenuation. If I go down even a hair more on the volume, it's practically off. I think I just miss having the MV, where I could reallly crank the power tubes. I absolutely love the rati's sound, I'm afraid it might just be too much amp for me right now. I'm feeling a little bit of "sold my old amp that was perfectly great to buy a new amp that is also great but doesn't work under my current playing conditions...remorse".

Bummer, time to trade back for a Maz 38!
I find that I notice tone loss even on the 1st click of the Brake Lite with my Komet 19...but it is not significant until the 3rd click. 4th click is not very pleasant.
Not unique to the Brake Lite though, my experience with any attenuator.
For getting a clean or fairly clean signal down in volume it works great. For trying to get tons of low-volume output tube distortion, good luck.

Maybe 4 EL84s are too much for what you do in general... Quickest fix to try for now may be to change the Rectifier tube in your Rati (You could have done that in the Maz 38 too.) Try to find a decent NOS 5V4 and it may give you a little more bloom and a couple of dbs less clean volume.
Consider less wattage like the Ghia, RxJr or Maz Jr. (or even a Remedy at 1/2 power). Any of these with or without a Brake-Lite or AirBrake gives a full lush tone. It all depends on what tone you want.

Thanks guys. Yeah, the 38 was super sweet. I let my producer friend talk me into the Mazerati over the 38. It really is the best amp I've ever used in the studio, but in most live situations, the 38 just covers more territory. Oh well...I have rehearsal tonight and I'm gonna play with it some more. I wish Mike still had that black and wheat 38 for sale!
