Hi, I am kinda new here. I have a new Mazerati and a 2x12 Z Best. Did my first gig tonight with it.........and brother was it loud! It was only on 10 or 11 o'clock and I was using a strat....and outside as well!!! I kept getting the 'cut it down' warning from the sound man. Our drummer is a heavy hitter and I had to turn up to hear myself. Anyway........the usual learning curve with a new amp, but about 5 songs in, I am feeling good. And I really felt we ended our show with a bang............really cool amp with lots of sounds and lots of umph!
Anyway, my problem is my old Ibanez tubescreamer (the $49 cheapie..........but it sounds good!) has just about had it. I have to stomp it several times to get it to work. Probably just needs a new switch, but this is really a pedal I got to use with my Fenders. My question is this............is there a better OD pedal for use with a Mazerati? I would like to be able to go creamy smooth with this pedal, but with some pop(!) to it. I am not looking for a harsh metal sound.
Thanks and great to be aboard! ;D

I have had great tone with my Mazerati (112 & Zbest 212) with either a Xotic Effects BB Preamp, or the Hermida Audio Zendrive.
The BB is more like a natural overdrive...very much marshall sounding without the mid-range hump of a tube screamer. Typically around $174 new. You can get lucky on eBay and find them for $140-$160 sometimes.
The Zendrive is very versatile as well. Mild break up to flat out sustained saturation. They are kind of costly...you can get one for typically for $250 - $300 on eBay. I really enjoy this one for sustained lead solos.
Look in the effects thread for more information on these. I hope this helps! 6strang

Ditto the BB Preamp - works really nice with the Mazerati.

Thanks, guys!
By the way, any thoughts on the Fulltone OCD or the Digitech Bad Monkey? The Bad Monkey is a real cheapie, but some people say it is very very good.

I have a Bad Monkey and I don't dig it at all with my Mazerati, FWIW.

I am using a Budda Phatman, I had to switch the tubes to GT 12AX7M's right away. Several OD's before that sucked were. TopHat Wonderboy, Morley Diamond Distortion, and I had a Fulltone Fulldrive II. Granted, at the time I had those OD's, my only guitar had real hot and cheap P-90's. Everything sounded brash and buzzy to me. The budda sounded buzzy at first, but it comes with cheap tubes. I would dare say that no one would like the Phatman with those stock tubes. Otherwise, I guess it's the best one that I have owned, but would think that the AM King of Tone and the Zendrive would be cool to try.

I have a Keeley modded TS9 that sounds and feels great with my Mazerati. If you like the sound of your tubescreamer, that might be something to check out. FWIW there IS quite a difference between the new, stock TS9's and the ones that he has modified.. I've played them side by side, and the one he put his hands on sounds much more dynamically open and not as "overdone" in the midrange.. more transparent but still has that Tubescreamer sound going on. I haven't tried Analogman's version but I'm sure it's great as well. I'm using that and a Fat Boost - nice combination.

The best pedal I ever heard on the Mazerati is this .... and I think that every player I work with uses them now.

Yeah, the Mazerati takes pedals well. Overdrives are a subjective bunch o pedals. There really is no "best".

Clark/Barber Gainster sounds great with the Mazerati!

Update on my above post......
I found that the Gainster sounded a bit harsh after a while through my Rati. Not sure why but after using the pedal a lot it starting sounding less and less pleasing to my ear. I've been using a HBE Power Screamer lately and so far it works really well. Especially the fat switch if your PS has one. No harshness and very smooth. Plenty of gain with just the right amount of attitude with the boost. Over all a much better match than the Gainster.
