A recent Z-28 convert and I am now looking at a Ghia. Please tell me there is no point having both.
Seriously, as a strat and a 'bucker player, and playing stuff that I need a tone ranging from Richard Thompson to Gary Moore are there any good reasons why I could really do with both amps? Trouble is the Z-28 nails these already pretty well! Does the Ghia keep up with the '28 cutting through the mix? (faintly reminiscent of a question I asked on the Z-28 forum - and I think I know what the answer is going to be...).
Does anyone switch heads for the ultimate 2 channel amp? Does anyone play one for single coils and the other for 'buckers?
Go on, tell me I need both. I want one. The only problem is - and this has also featured in another thread - what do I tell the wife? Help! I havn't explained away the Z-28 yet..... danger danger... I need some ammo here.
;D

Gotta have them both, actually the rule is to NEVER NEVER EVER sell a Z amp! I too went Z-28-Ghia-Maz Jr...and a Mini thrown in for kicks!

Hey Dave, I just ordered a Z-28 and a MAZ 38 SR and plan on using a amp switcher. The Voodoo Labs switcher to be exact. I haven't played a CG yet, but it's on my list of Z's to play/buy. You could probably set them up to "like" single coils or humbuckers better, depending on what tubes you put in them. For me, I thought about the tonal characteristics of each amp, what makes them unique. How they fit in with the rest of my gear and made my decision. As for your wife, I can't help ya, my girlfriend is completely cool with me buying whatever gear I want. Although she did say she wanted me to order my Z's in blonde, so I did. But I didn't tell her I was gonna anyway!:>) Seriously, from what everyone is saying it sounds like the Ghia may be the best amp Z has made. And after playing a Z-28, I'd have a hard time believing that the 2 amps wouldn't sound amazing together. Ya only live once.

Thanks guys. In terms of reason and sanity you have been no help whatsoever!!! There is a Ghia head for sale within 20 miles of where I live. Remarkable that there is one for sale in the UK at all, let alone one so close. Perhaps there is such a thing as destiny....
jwr - I really like the sound of that setup. And yep - you only live once. I tell myself this quite a lot these days!
I would use my Lehle to switch between heads. I have recently been doing this between with the Boogie and the Z-28 and it works great, but shows SPECTACULARLY how the Z eclipses the Boogie in terms of sound quality. Even our drummer noticed it. No question. It was really interesting to do this. The boogie is brilliant for single string lead, still is, no doubt and you can warm it up nicely with the powerful mid control, but the bass response.... well, we all know about the boogie flab and what the Z does at the bottom end. But what was so amazing to me was realising that the Boogie had a coloured sound by comparison - all pickup combinations had a common tonal element to them. The Z in stark contrast was so transparent, every pickup combination was so different. It is like removing cotton wool from your ears. OK not a very fair test using different cabs, even so...

How often does a Z come up for sale 20 miles away from us internationals? And a Ghia no less! I'm afraid that amp has your name on it Tell the lady it's destiny!

Man are you for real Dave?
Don' t worry about the old lady! Women just make up rules so us guys can break em'. Im listening to (Dire Straits-Communique) and I am positive the Charmin Ghia set at around 10 o' clock and the tone anywhere between 1 and 3 would nail this tone eaaaaaasy. In fact,Knopfers new rig is a Komet head designed by noneother than Trainwrecks' Ken Fischer. Although I'm sure not everyone on this site is as big a fan of mark as myself but in saying that I don't think anyone would dispute that his tone wheather clean and spanky with heaps of chickin pickin stle licks to his new throaty wailing stuff on the Paul would dispute his amazing tone.Im sure you could get both with 2 Z's and man.......you already own 1 of them.
20 miles down the road.........we expect a full tone report from you in the coming weeks!

I noticed you are bidding on one yourself Mr Groover! I just bought a block of land so my G.A. days are over for a while. Unfortunately the G.A.S. hasn't subsided. Good Luck and yes...Mr Knopler is a demi god.

Hmmmm yes, I'm toying with the thought of getting one but things are a bit tight financially after shelling out a few bucks for Xmas presents for 2 nieces and a nephew. Guitars, amps for one of them and a drum kit for an 8 year old as a present took its toll on my credit card.
If i do buy the Ghia it still hasn't changed a thing as far as getting a second if not main gigging rig to accompany replace the Maz. Ghia sounds cool but something with more, if not bigger bottles and a more open sound is definately coming my way soon.
I'll be sure to let you know when I get it, don't be too surprised though if it's something you are very familiar with.

Hi Nickg! I saw your thread and thought oh oh we are talking about the same thing here!! If you get it I'd love to hear it. And it will get me out of a lot of trouble! Have you noticed that the current high bidder (Hellooo....! you are not on the forum as well are you? C'mon reveal yourself!) already bought a Ghia just a few weeks ago? There are obviously a lot of Z addicts about... Its a dangerous amp to get involved with. Is there a Z rehab unit yet?
Anyway nice to make contact with a fellow UK Z user - there can't be too many of us about. Or are there.....?

Congratulations dave!- beat me by a tenner! What cab are you gonna get with it? That will be a sweet rig, whatever. Good luck with the wife! I'm probably gonna settle for a ghia 2x10 combo from peach ideas. Sorry about making you pay a bit extra- i didn't mean to. I'd love to hear what it sounds like ("The one that got away" lol) Nick

What have I done! Its listening to all these guys on the forum that does it. Its all their fault!! Well the Boogies gotta go now thats for sure.
So, what can I say. Sorry Nick, hope you get your Z soon. We are playing near Reading (sort of near Oxford...) in a couple of weeks if you want to come and have a look and try out. Or may that will be too hard to bear... Anyway, all the best with the Z quest. Dave
