I have a maz jr nr that im just not happy with . The amp just seems way to bright and when I dial it out the tone sounds a little weird to me . Ive never had a El84 amp before and Im thinking that "chime" is something im not into . Ive tried several different speakers and that didnt solve my problems either. Those of you with experience on both amps how does the brightness compare ?

I think the 28 is thicker sounding amp. It might be where your setting the tone controls on the Maz jr. Do you have an open or close back cab, is it combo. Matbe it's a preamp tube. If it's you first EL84 amp, well it's a new experience Check out these things. The Maz Jr. was not for me. I did.t think it was too bright, just didn't have the thump I was looking for at the time. The Z-28 did. I still have it.

Check the phase inverter tube in the Maz Jr. If it's a 12AX7 LPS try one that is not the LPS... I got word from a good source that a decent Chinese 12AX7 W may be able to tame the highs a little bit... also I've tried TAD tubes for the EL84s and there were some that helped the brightness a bit too.
To me the Maz Jr. is generally a brighter amp than the Z-28 but are very different sounding amps.

I use a RCA 12ax7A in V1,Telfunken ECC83 V2,and in the PI Telfunken ECC83.I think that would help alot.

That cut control should be all you need to dial it in. Go to 1/4 open I can darn near dial my maz to resemble my Z

I dont know if the 18 is the right amp for deluxe reverb sounds, if its anything like the MAZ38 it can approximate those sounds as well as lots of others but its own thing is happening. I have to say that I used to be into the "sounds like" mode. Now I want it to sound like a Z. If I want a DR, I will buy one. I can however get my Z28 to come pretty close to a DR sound...but it sounds like a Z28 more than anything else. I own a Vibrolux reverb Bface and I prefer the 28. Although the VR sounds good, it is not the Z. It sits and gets no play time now. I don;t know if there is a wrong Z as each of the ones I have owned sounded killer but I am into the 28 for over a year now. MAZ38 does not get much playtime now, not because it sounds bad its just the 28 sounds so good.

listen to this clip that 6strang did for us all...nice tones with the Z28 and a fendery type of vibe to it but a voice all it's own too. That's what I find sets these Z's apart from everyone else...their own voice and character.... I don't find my Maz 18 too bright at all and my only guitar is a tele. If you get a chance, try them both side by side and go with the one that grabs you most www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=832014&songID=7367561

The Z 28 has a fat clean sound and a plexi vibe to it when you crank it up, warm and crunchy. Not nearly as bright as the Maz.

I had the same problem when I first switch over to EL-84 amps. When you get used to playing EL-34 amps or 6L6 amps, its almost like its really tough to get a EL-84 amp dialed in how you really like it. But if you mess with it a little more and try to set the eq different ways and maybe even dialing it up ways that you may "presume" that would be too dark and you may come out with something that you really like. Try that before you are totally turned off of your maz.

That's why my Z28 gets all the attention and the Maz gets the second banana treatment. Grew up with Marshalls and the Z28 does the clean better than a Marshall but still has a thick chewy crunch tone.
