Hi, this is my first post. I hope it works.....
I have a Maz Sr 2x12 combo w/reverb. I wanted this amp for a long time after borrowing a friend's Maz 38 "invasion". Now that i have had the amp for a few months i have decided that the old invasion is a bit more to my liking.
The only for sure difference i notice in the two is that the Invasion has two 25w Greenbacks and mine has a Vintage 30 plus a regular G12 (70 watt?). The Invasion has a more earthy warm tone which i like more than mine. Mine is HUGE sounding, with more low end and presence and seems louder. Some people might prefer that, but i like it the other way. Q- will putting Greenbacks in my amp get me closer to the tone of the Invasion i liked or am i barking up the wrong tree?
Q #2- For loud gigs where i play alot of heavy rock (i play in casino bands and private party bands and LA club original artist side bands) i use a JCM800 2X12 combo with either an MIAudio Tube Zone or an OCD in front. I wanted the Dr Z for classier-jazzier-bluesier things because the Marshall is too cold for those at times. I have found that i like my Maz the best at these gigs, which are the quietest. The Maz is really loud but i don't like the open sag when it gets too loud. I am looking at possibly getting a Weber solid state rectifier to try on the Z for louder/rockier things, looking for the best of both worlds. That way i could swap back and forth between tube and SS rectifier depending on the style of gig.
Hopefully this makes some sense. I would love some opinions about these ideas.
Thanks-Jason

I don't have gobs of experience with the 25w greenbacks, but I do know that speakers make a huge difference in sound. More so that tubes, strings, cables, picks, etc in my experience. I'm not sure how the Doc wires his combos, but you should try hooking your Maz head up to your friends speakers and compare the tone that way.
I know where you're coming from, though. I bought my Maz Sr because my friends Mazarati is so dang cool. I knew I was buying a different amp, but still wish I could get those Mazarati tones out of my MAZ!
