Is it ok to use an unbalanced 12AX7 in V2 of my RT66? What's the tonal advantage of using PI tube that is balanced? A link to a discussion on this topic would be very appreciated. Thanks, Perry

I think the reason that the balanced dual triode (e.g. 12AX7) is recommend for PI stages is that the PI is splitting the upper and lower halves of your signal and sending the halves to the push-pull power amp tubes. The separate push and pull sides separately amplify the halves of the signal. A balanced PI tube will more faithfully amplify the signal (much like matched output tube pairs). Also, because the PI is directly before the output power stage, it will affect the nature of the power tube distortion.
