TAD is Tube Amp Doctor. They are supposed to have really nice 6L6GCs. That's all I know though.

I dropped a match pair of EL84's in my Rx Jr about 5 months ago and they sounded just as good if not a TAD better than the GT's that were in there and I've had no issues at all.

I have some TAD. The EL84s I have two different batches I guess... first batch was a little darker or less bright and I used them in one of my Maz Jrs. I'm happy with them. Next ones sounded about the same as my GT and JJ tubes. I think one of my Ghias has them in there. I'm going to get a matched set of 6V6 and check them out too.

oh btw will the phase inverter tube change from 5751 to 12ay7 drive the power tubes harder so that when i dial in "distortion" it comes more from the power tubes than the preamp in adition to make the "clean" sound more "open" ? also does the gain drop from 70 to some 40-50 in phase inverter position mess with bias in any way? sry if these questions are dumb just have to check

I've used TAD 6V6's in a Silverface Deluxe Reverb with excellent results.
Which Z amp do you intend to use this tube in?

A few days ago I replaced my Groove Tubes with the TAD EL84 STR in the Carmen Ghia head. To me they sound very good!

+++1 for TADs. I use the '84s in my MAZ18NR, and TAD 6L6s in my Victoria, warm, clear, no weak spots, and they last! I like JJs, but the TADs just rule.

The 5751 will drive the output section harder in this case. A quote from Myles on the PI subject, "When you push your amp hard it is not as much the output tubes distorting as it is the phase inverter breaking down and distorting." You can check out more on PI at his site and here; www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/files/Phaseinverter.pdf

Something, Congrats on experimenting with different tubes. One of the many benefits of a DR. Z amp is that you can actually hear the difference in tubes. I have been using TAD EL84's in my Z's..sounds killer. Also, I am using the ECC83/7025/12AX7. I also used the TAD 6L6 short bottles. Killer! Rick

ya i read some of the posts on guitarblueprint(a excellent web page btw lots of good info there) a couple of days after i posted the question and understood how it works so was tempted to delete the question but figured no one would read it makes me laugh now lol how many dumb questions ive posted in different threads umm uneducated or something dunno anyway i learn a little more everytime hehe its all good ;D think i posted a similar thread somewhere else on the forum to awhile back regarding the 12ay7 and what amps it could be used as a phase inverter in and myles gave me some good answears cool guy for sure i use the tube on some ocations still for its more headroom sound but changing tubes are a compromise cant get all kinds of sound colors from one type (or even same type and same brand because of specs being pretty random) mostly using the cryo treated 5751 its pretty good more headroom and clarity than a regular 5751 but still packs more omph than a 12ay7 and dirt. Its like with guitar every part type (tube in this case) makes a difference like using different pickups in a guitar ya thats a better picture
