Hey guys I have a Maz Jr and a Stangray head...trying to round up cash for a Maz Sr. I am very tempted to move the 'Ray in favour of a new or used Maz Sr...anyone here see this as being a good or bad move? Since I have the Jr already, am I being redundant or will I be missing my Stangray right away??
Thanks for any insight.

Depends on what you got in front of your 'Ray. You will miss the 'Ray's cleans, but you won't be redundant with a Jr. and a Sr.
The way I see it, the Jr. is a grilled sirloin burger and the Sr. is a grilled sirloin. The Stang Ray is a grilled tenderloin. Your effects pedals are the marinade.

Amp is VERY clean when pedal is off, albeit a beautiful fender meets vox clean sound. I like the idea of having the master vol on the Sr to work the amp a bit. Thanks again.

Grilled tofu? Is that the best you could come up with, kruzty? Grilled tofu? Thanks for the witty translation, nonetheless.

;D
Reminds me of Bubba in Forrest Gump...
"Grilled shrimp, shrimp soup, poached shrimp, fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, shrimp gumbo, barbecued shrimp.....I guess that's about it."

haha...the incredible morphing thread. I wish I could keep bot the 'Ray and buy the Sr...maybe if I save for a while ... The Ray is just such a great amp...but I don't want to have too many EL84 amps. I'd almost rather decide on either a 'Ray or a Sr. and then get a Route 66 or something.

Had a StingRay myself and was faced with the same situation, I opted to trade the Ray and keep the 38 and I don;t regret the decision...not that the Ray is not a great amp, but IMHO the 38 can cover alot of ground and can get into Ray territory somewhat as well.... I however recently bought a new Z28 and now everything else is "resting".... The 28 has alot of things going on for it and is lighter...I will never get rid of the 38 as it can do lots of things very well...I have the 1-12 combo NR ...changed out the speaker to a Tonker and am very satisfied with the sound... The problem you are having is I believe by design...these amps are so damn good that they all sound great and its really impossible to pick just one....I am looking for annother now, just not sure which one or to wait and see what new stuff is coming down the line.... If I had to choose only one between the Ray and the 38 for me, it would be the 38.
*just a thought, but I wonder if there will ever be a Z Bass amp, or a Z acoustic amp*...just wondering.....wondering...

The MAZ Sr cover all the ground you could ask for. The Master Volume Control is a tool I could not be without....Get the SR

I agree with fishman, the Maz Sr can cover a lot of the same ground as the Ray. It just won't do that really bright, chimey, clean Vox tone. Which for me is a good thing cause I feel it's too bright, but that's just me. You can get a lot of different tones with a Maz Sr., Vox, Plexi, and Fender Super. It's the most versatile amp in the Z line up. I'm using mine with a stock Z 2X10 cab and a Z 1x12 cab with a Emi Cannabis Rex and it's a huge, wonderful sound. Big, very articulate, but not as articulate as the Ray. And you can have a loop put on a reverb model, I did and it's worth it.

I am moving away from the Stangray, and I have it up in the Buy, Sell, Trade section. I would like to get the NR with a loop as I've heard the NR attains earlier breakup. I play mostly rock and blues, with a teeny bit of roots in there, so I think a Sr. or a '66 would be the ticket for me. And like you said...it is so hard to get rid of a Z amp...!! If only I could afford them all. By the way it looks like you have a schweet collection of amps there. The Shiva is a great great amp. Cheers and thanks, Brandon

Thanks, my collection has been a serious labor of love. I'd like to have a Bogner OS 2X12 cab someday, that must sound good with your Maz Jr. As for the NR, if you don't like reverb or don't need it than go with the NR. But if you think you may use it then get the reverb model, if you tube the amp right you can get the same amount of gain out of the verb model as a NR.

I will say this....the Jr and Sr are different beasts in my opinion. I played both extensively and in different configurations up the Twin Cities and I certainly did not find the Sr to be a 'more powerful version of the Jr' as some say. Its its own beast for sure. Maybe you already know that.
I ended up going with the Jr as it suited me better tonewise and I dont need the 38w. Get up to American Guitar Boutique (or American Guitar & Band...whatever it is now) and try both. Id be more inclined to pick up a Galaxie or wait to see the Evan if it were me.
