Can I put 6CA7's in my Z-28?
I would like a lil extree headroom and slightly different tone(yeah I wanna KT-28)
I know the JJ 6V6's are not true 6V6's and are themselves are a bit more powerful so would the voltages be that far off.
If the pin outs are diff that is ok Ho (Ultimate atten) would be performing the work.

i wouldnt do it,, i would guess you could technically have it biased for 6L6s,( i did see one for sale used that was biased for 6L6s) but i dont think i would use el34s in mine,, just my 2 cents..

I don't know the specs on the PT/OT, but the 6CA7 (1.5A per tube) draws three times the heater current that the 6V6 (0.5A per tube) does, so you'd have to see if the PT can handle that. The bias circuit may need to be altered as well, 6CA7's usually bias a lil hotter than 6V6's. You would have to rewire the power amp for the 6CA7's suppressor grid, which is wired internally in 6V6/6L6's. The OT may have a small impedance mismatch going from 6V6's to 6CA7's which could affect power output efficiency to the speaker. Not sure how much power the OT can handle, probably up to 30 watts non continuos?
Might be cheaper to get some high rated GT6V6's like 7 to 10?

Interesting stuff, but I'm still wondering what you mean by the JJ 6V6's not being true 6V6's...

You could ask about the 6V6S in the tubes or experts or give myles a pm about it, myles knows a ton about tubes.

Yes purchasing "10" rated GT's is what I'm in the process of doing at the moment.Good suggestion.

greenz check with myles about GT"s rated 10. He told me they were unstable. I was thinking about those for a second.

Richard Thanks for the heads up Richard,I would hope that GT would be more disrciminating than to sell a sub-par product. Myles, of course has my full confidence in regards to these matters.

Have you thought about changing the speaker(s)?

Have you thought about changing you tone settings? Recently I discovered bass and treble at about 11 o'clock. I could wind the amp up to about 4 o'clock and get very loud cleanish leads. Coupled with a couple of 100db speakers (Red Fang and WGS vet 30) you have a loud amp

Yes I've been looking at those plug-in variety SS recti's but I'm not sure if Zaite himself has warned against using them. Also the tube change isn't necessarily just about volume a 6L6 would be easier to adapt to the amp(the 6V6 "S" is close to being one already) but my query was about 6CA7's so tone is a factor here.
