I decided recently that I really didn't have much of a need for a channel switching amp since I only use the clean channel and use pedals for Overdrive/Distortion. It became obvious, in part by reading this forum, that Z is "da man."
I also knew that a MAZ-38 was the best option for me. After talking to Z himself today (what a character; I love this guy!), I hopped over to Charley's Guitar Shop in Dallas, thinking I would buy a MAZ-38 1x12.
Instead, I bought a Peavey Transtube, a few better amp in my opinion.
Gotcha.
Anyway, they didn't have the 1x12 as they said (bummer), but they did have a MAZ-38 2x12. I wasn't in the market for that big a combo, but 35 minutes after I get there, I leave lugging my new Black MAZ-38 2x12 Reverb Combo amp.
I demoed it with a Carvin CTM-6 and Fender EJ Strat, and both guitars sounded absolutely killer. I also used a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 and Keeley/Boss BD-2, and the amp really changed personalities when used with these different pedals (in a good way). This is a very pedal-friendly amp.
So, I'm sold. I'm also very thankful that I have a Rocknroller handtruck to carry this big boy around.
Thanks for the help today, Dr. Z. You made me a customer for life!

At a boy! get a padded cover with a bottom flap so you don't scratch up the bottom using the hand truck. They scratch quick!

You made a good choice, and you might have that amp forever...
Rock on.

It was a great choice, but, believe it or not, I've already returned the amp. The 2x12 was too much of a haul up and down the stairs in our house.
I did, though, put my name down for a MAZ-38 1x12 combo that should be in the shop in a few days. The 47 lbs will be much more to my liking. I love the 2x12, but I may just buy an external cabinet to supplement the 1x12.
I'm still in the family, though!

Bad news for you man. That info is wrong on the Z site. My Maz 38 1x12 combo weighs 60 pounds. Another guy once posted his weighed 65 pounds. If weight is an issue I'd try to swing a separate head and cab. If funds are short you could use another brand cab but the Z cabs really do sound nice. My fave is the 2x10 cab. It only weighs 30 pounds and sounds great! Studio Slips are great covers. Le Covers and Tuki really can't be beat either I just prefer the clamshell Studio Slips.

As Scooby-Doo would say, "Ruh-roh"!
I still might be okay, though, as long as the dimensions are still correct. The amp was more bulky than heavy, so the 1x12 might still cut it.
If not, I'll look into the MAZ-18 Junior Reverb 1x12.
Thanks for the head's up!

Hi there! Congrats on the Maz!!! For covers, check out Studio Slips. The doc has the link on his web site. Susan is very helpful. I've got the full enclosure for my Maz head, z-best cab and just ordered the full enclosure for my Ghia.

Hey Toomanytoys, Great name. I went the same route with a maz sr combo and ended up with a seperate head and cab. It's a great amp and you can get so many different sounds with different speaker cabs! Good luck as you're already headed down the right path.

I've used combo amps since I swore off 4x12's that I used in high school and were such a pain to transport and store.
Folks on this board have me thinking, though, that separate heads and 2x12 cabs might be the way for me to go. If I get a versatile enough cab, I can use it with a variety of heads and save some dough in the long run. Plus, if I ever need to send the amp back for service, it will be a LOT easier.
I'm looking into buying an Avatar 2x12 cab to use w/ the MAZ-38 head. Anyone have any experience with that combination?

I bought a Maz 38 head & a zbest cab. It sounds great, but lugging the zbest around was a hassle. It now stays in my practice room. I ended up buying two separate Avatar 1x12 cabs. I put an Eminence Governor in the closed back, and a Tone Tubby Alnico in the open back. Most gigs I just bring one cab, but sometimes I use both of them. The beauty is that no one piece weighs more than 30 lbs.
