I have never played a Dr. Z amp. However, there is a Maz 38 Sr. in transit heading for my house. I've got to admit, I'm pumped up about it. Already, I'm wondering what speaker would be good with the 1 X 12 combo. I was thinking Tone Tubby or Celestion Gold. Do any of you have suggestions for me? I'd appreciate any input you may offer up. Thanks, Bo

Hi Bo, I have a MAZ Sr. Head and use it with different speaker cabs but mainly a 1x12" cab. Over the last 2 years I've tried a lot of different speakers incl. Celestion G12H30 and V30, Eminence Wizard, Governor, Tonker and Red Fang. All these speakers are good anyway but my personal favourites are the G12H and the Red Fang. Great combo so they' sit together in my occasionally used 2x12" cab see my avatar... But we were talking about 1x12, right? I ended up with a Weber AlNiCo Bluedog 50W - IMO the best speaker for a 1x12" solution with the MAZ Sr. Ok, the Gold will be great too, maybe even slightly better. But it's IMO too pricey (c'mon, it's just a new 12" speaker ).

I have an alnico Tone Tubby in mine and I like it better than the stock celestion. If you want hemp try a Cannabis Rex form Eminence.

C-Gold is awesome. Weber Blue is also a great speaker for less money. Another great one is a Sliver Bell.

Weber Alnico Blue Dog is the best speaker I've heard to date IMO. Does it all well. Haven't heard the Gold, but trusted sources swear by it. I'm just not sure it's $80-$90 better than the Weber.

Another vote for the Weber blue alnico 50w. I've been full circle, including a Celestion Gold, and am comfortably back home with the Weber. The Gold sounds awesome but is way loud and you have to watch your bass knob carefully. For my needs the Weber blue is the perfect, toneful speaker. Try it and see what you think.

Madison,
What do you mean that you "have to watch your bass knob carefully?" Speaker damage? ... bad sound?

+ on the Webers, Tone Tubby's and C-Blue or Gold. The C-Blue require two and you have to be careful not to over crank the amp. I like em all, cant decide which is "best".

Contrats in the new maz, great amp. All of the suggestions are right on. I would add one thought. The Weber Blue Dog and probably all of the alnico speakers have this wonderful smooth response and compression which works well for all types of music. IMHO the ceramic speaker, like the G12H, has a quicker response for more of an apparent imediate crunch and bite. So depending on the type of music you play one might be better suited. A slight comparision, which there are many and not all will agree but alnico for blues and ceramic for metal. YMMV.

Hey Guys,
I received the Maz 38 SR with reverb last week. It sure does sound good! I took it to practice, and the guys went crazy for it. It really does live up to the hype. I'm tickled to death with it.

It's me again. Just wanted to let you know that I gigged on Saturday for the first time with the Maz 38 SR. I swear it inspired me. I played better than I normally do, and had several people comment on the tone. It was a fun night all the way around. With regard to my initial question, I've narrowed it down the the tone tubby or the celestion gold. I'm not sure which yet.

Don't want to be the wet blanket here, but when you have 2 speakers in a circuit you rate it at 2X the wattage of the lower powered speaker. The physics may or may not be obvious, but the percentage of power that goes through a speaker is related to its impedance. Your 15W Blue will be taking half the power of your amp, thus you rate the combo at 30W.
Now, that being said--the Blues sound incredible; many people have used 2 Blues in similar circuits with good reliability; I doubt you use all the power this amp can make on a regular basis.
Now, THAT being said--it's your choice what you do, but a 15W speaker + a 30W speaker = 30W power rating. End of story.

hey paulgiz,
You are aware that I have only one 12 inch speaker in my amp right? You talk about 2 speakers......it doesn't apply in my situation.

Bo, first, cheers and welcome aboard. some questions:what kind of tunes were you playin' when you gigged? where abouts are you gigging? and, any pedals in-between your guitar and amp? cheers Joel

We gig in and around the Pittsburgh, PA area. Mostly in small clubs...a few blues festivals here and there. For the song selection, we do things like Trouble No More, Stateboro Blues, One Way Out....etc. Obviously, the Allman Brothers with a heavy dose of traditional Chicago Blues. As far as pedals...none. I have a Peterman Stomp Tuner and that's it. I just use the guitar volume to control my level.

Congrats, I love my Maz 38, awesome by golly amp. Don't worry about the speaker, get a C-Gold and try it, get a red Tone Tubby and try it. If yeeain't happy with one of em someone on the forum will buy it from ya. I bought one each of all the recommended speakers and by golly they all sound great! So what's the point in worrying about it, their ain't none ;D. Just grab the plastic, spend the money and have fun . If your serious about your music then don't worry about the money. It will come later, someday later, maybe if your lucky but no matter. I've only gigged with my Maz once. Used two 1x12 open back Mesa Boogie cabs one alnico Blue Dog and one alnico Silver Bell both 30 watts no dope. At sound check I plugged in to the amp, turned up the Master and Volume, strummed a chord let it ring, just listened to the chord ringing and I was done. I could not believe the sound that came outa that set up OMG!. The other guitar player was using some kinda of dang modern 40 knob Marshall combo with one 12. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D During sound check he strumed a few chords tweaked 20 different knobs....strumed a few more...tweaked I forgot how many more knobs how many more times ;D ;D ;D. When he finished I strumed a chord and let it ring, he looked over at me with a long face and just said DAYUM that sounds freakin awesome..... I felt so bad for him, that little crappy Marshall had just been put to shame ;D ;D ;D .
