Thanks to Brent's Scratch-n-Dent sale, I just converted my Z28 2x10 combo to a head and 1x12 cab, and saved a few bucks in the process! Thanks, Brent! Sure, the grille cloth isn't a perfect match, but what the heck . . . it's good enough for me. I gigged with the combo last weekend and really liked the tone of the amp. Now I need to find a 1x12 that will give me a tight low end, plenty of headroom, and not color my tone too much. I just threw a Cannabis Rex in the cab and while it's ok, it didn't blow me away, so I'd like to keep looking. I'm thinking less mids. If I could find a 1x12 that gave me what the Z 2x10's give me, that'd work. Any suggestions? Thanks - Edited to add: I just tried a different guitar through the Z28/C-Rex combination - one with more vintage sounding humbuckers as opposed to more aggressive hummers. Not bad. The mids don't seem so pronounced. I'd still be interested to hear if there's a 12" speaker out there that'll emulate the tone of Dr Z's 10's.

Thanks, Dave. This head & cab is a nice set-up, and once I get a speaker in that cab that sounds good with a couple different guitars, I'll be good to go. I still have the 2x10 I got from you, and my local Z dealer is bringing in a Remedy head to match. If the Remedy is everything I expect it to be, I should be good to go, and I'll broom my last vintage Fender amp. I just wish I had given Dr Z gear a try a few years ago.

I converted mine to a head and 1x12 a few years back too. I had a Celestion Century Neo in there and it was great with that amp. Plenty of headroom, power handling, crisp lows and highs....all the stuff you're looking for. I've since traded that cab for a 2x10, but it was a killer and very light as a bonus. That speaker weighs about 3 lbs or so.

RedFang Sounds killer in my 1-12
If this remedy is anything like its cracked up to be , the last of my vintage fenders may end up on the block as well. They have alot of sentimental value, as well as $$ but you can;t hear sentimental value. And for what you can hear, Z covers it.

UnclePat and Fishman - are you guys playing single coils or humbuckers through your Z28?
The Cannabis Rex I have in the 1x12 right now sounds good with single coils, and not bad with more vintage sounding hummers, but more aggressive humbuckers don't seem to play well with this set up.

Singles (Strat and Les Paul with P90's) plus a Les Paul Standard for me. I traded for a Carr Hammerhead II head/1x12 cab rig a couple of years ago, and it came with a Cannabis Rex. I have to agree it did really well with the Strat and P90's. The Standard, eh...not so much. When I traded that 1x12/Century cab for a Z 2x10, I didn't lose a thing in my sound but some laser beam effect.

Celestion or weber 50w ceramics, will do you fine..in that mix. Weber 35 blue dog is great but a bit underpowered.

My main guitar is a 20+ year old Strat. I have alot of guitars and this one sounds best with this amp....overall. however, if I want to get down an dirty then cranking the 28 and the LP can get some killer sounds. I have a RedFang alnico which I like, had used several celestions and landeded on this speaker for two reasons, one price, two, user reviews...and the reviews are right. Where to me, and this is my own opinion, the single coil guitars sound alive and right there with this amp, in a cleaner mode the HB guitars seem to be a bit foggy at lower volumes. they do come into it at louder settings but singles seem to me at least to sound good all over the place. this is sorta like trying to compare exotic race cars, one is better off the line, one handles better, one has more top end etc etc.... are they better or worse, I don;t think so, just different. After that long winded spiel I say for me, if I have a choice it would be single coil guitars. I have found that true to greater or lesser degree with the MAZ38 , 28 and StingRay. those are what I have had.

Thanks for the input, guys. I tried a couple different cabs over the weekend. The Black Shadow speaker in my Mesa 3/4 closed back cab sounded outstanding with the Z28 - including humbuckers. So, I might just leave the C-Rex in the Z 1x12 for my strat, and take the Mesa or Z 2x10 when I want to play humbuckers. We'll see.

For those who might be interested, I picked up an Eminence Governor yesterday and threw it in the open back 1x12. It sounds great with humbuckers. Good balance, and despite the description of this speaker as having early breakup and strong mids, the highs seem articulate, stays relatively clean longer than I expected, and it's LOUD. Haven't tried it with a Strat yet. That'll be next. I covered the opening in the back, and didn't care for the results. Not sure if it's the cabinet geometry or the speaker, but the open back tone has much more clarity.
Our next gig is in two weeks, and I'm definitely taking the Z28 and this cab.

Thanks for the update. Interested to hear how your next gig goes. Also, interesting about your finding with open-back vs closed back. All I've ever run with my '28 is open back cabs - Z 112 or Z 210. But now you've got me a bit curious about Emi Governor ... as all I'm using lately is humbucker guitars ... cheers always, eh Joel

I tried mine with a open-back 1-12.....with the higher power (new) Jenson. The ones they put in the new Fender Deluxe RI. It was out-standing.

My favorites in a 1x12 are the Weber 12F150 (cone to taste). I've tried both the B and W cones in 25 watt versions. Both sounded great. A very good guitarist friend just gigged my 28 with my 1x12 Gold cab and really liked that combination. I have to admit that I don't play the 28 through the Gold cab much myself.

I don't have Z28...yet, but I do have one of the Celestion G12 Century Neo's that Uncle Pat mentioned. I've used it with my Ghia head in one of Doc's convertible cabinets. Currently, it's in my Clark tweed deluxe cabinet. It's beat out Vintage 30's, G12H30's, Celestion Blue's, 3 different Weber's and an Emi Swamp Thang. Great speaker!

Thanks for the input, guys. As much as I liked the Z28 as a head, I converted it back to a 2x10 combo and sold the head cab and speaker cab. I kept it as a combo for a few months, but I always reached for my Remedy. Apparently, it took care of my 20 watt 6V6 thing, so I just traded the Z28 for a KT45. That KT is one smokin' amp!
