It appears the Sr. will arrive in about 2 weeks and I am starting to think about cab options.
I would really like to build my own, but from what I have read it can get a little expensive to build and without experience I would hate for it to come out not sounding too good. Just wondering if any of you guys were also into building cabs or if thats just a waste on such a amp as the sr.

...building a cab is a good idea if you have someone to help you out...if you're gonna tackle it on your own without woodworking skills you're probably better off snagging a prefab unit...Avatar cabs are a great low cost option....check the gear page www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php for good deals on used speakers and cabs.....

Its hard to save any money on a first cab. With wood, speakers, hardware, new tools, screwups it costs about double. Then you need a couple of builds to get it right.
Fun project, though.
You're much more likely to get a good sound if you start with cab you know sounds good, and use the dimensions. Avatar has the dimensions of the cabs on the site, as does doc.
Open backed cabs are easiest.

I built my own cab with wood from Home Depot. I used 3/4" clear pine and 3/8" Russian Baltic Plywood for the baffle and back panels (it is 1/3 open back). I just butted/screwed the corners together and braced them from inside with 1/2"x2'. I used no glue. I put no finish or tolex on the cab and put grill cloth between the speaker and the baffle. It looks real raw, but big whoop. It is extremely "alive" sounding and really resonates. It does not rattle at gig levels. It is bright sounding at home and very detailed at small clubs. Excellent. Now...I had a pine cabinet custom made by a pro and it has Hiwatt salt/pepper grille cloth and black tolex. It has exquisite dove tail (strongest) joints, smaller corner bracing, clamped and glued and masterfully finished. Sound is less bright, deeper bass (cab resonates more), projection a little less. Different, not better. I wouldn't be caught dead with my home made cab at a festival, competition or major gig. But in a studio the hotter cab is great for the Tele as it is edgy and upper mid biased. The custom cab is better with the Strat. The home brew was fun and effective....but tacky.
