So I see on this forum 3 re-occuring threads:
1. "I ain't got a Z yet, which one should I get?" 2. "I love my Z {fill in the blank with model}!" 3. "I've got a Z {fill in the blank with model} and I want a second Z - which should I get?"
Personally, I've gone through each of the aforementioned queries, and just answered #3 yesterday - I bought ANOTHER Maz38, w/reverb and effects loop in a 1X12 combo. My current rig is a Maz38 head (same options), and several Z cabs. I've been looking for a 1X12 combo for some time, and found this one in blonde, just like all my others.
My reasoning was as follows - playing around Nashville at shows, showcases, and songwriter nights demands extreme portability - I've been using the head and a 2X10 cab (EXCELLENT cab by the way with those Z/Weber speakers) but wanted a more compact setup. I talked to a bunch of guys (Jayson Chance among them) about a combo - and I kept coming back to the Maz38---
So write me down as one of the odd ducks in the puddle - because my second Z is the same as my first - and I ain't partin' with either of 'em.
By the way - The new one's serial number is but 6 digits off from my old one - could they have been made the same day or at the very least, probably the same week! (Thanks to John C....)
Sorry for the lengthy post, but I felt it was a bit of a unique tale.

Hey King, that is awesome! Congrats on the 2nd Z, even if it's the same model. I went with a 2nd, but it was for something different. Ya know the Doc makes a good smorgusboard (sp) of amps. All look great, and sound great... but each one a tad different.
My 2nd z was a Ghia 1x12 in blonde. I would have to say this though. If my first amp was a Ghia, a second choice would be difficult to make if I wanted another one.

Yeah Paul...them there Ghias are most cool. Matter of fact, I was scopin' one out earlier today.
I made a mistake and went by a local amp store (Rock Block).
Here's the list: 1X12 Ghia 1X12 Z28 2X12 Stangray Maz38 NR Head & 2X12 cab Maz18 1X12 combo Z 4X10 cab Z Best
Alas, as John Conlee said, "I'm Busted"....so no more Z's for the time being.

Hey for all you other Z addicts with multiple-same-model-amps, what was your reasoning? I didn't realize there were others here with the "affliction". Just curious as to why you may have chosen two same-model Z's...and if you have other Z's or amps...maybe your thoughts were like mine, or perhaps you have reasons I haven't explored. I think it's easier to justify multiple-different-model amps than in this case. I know I had a bit of a conversation with the little woman when I told her I was buying another Maz38...for some reason, she just didn't understand my clear, precise, and unbiased thought process....

Two Ghias here, and due to their configuration and speakers, I get different tones from each. And still, those little hairs on the back of my neck stand up every time I plug into either one!
Addiction ... Illness .... the Cleveland Flu .... GAS ... fanaticism .... call it what you like, but we got it here on the Z!
Hey, who did that tune - Channel Z? Was it the B-52s?

You don't need a reason to have two of the same model Z's...
but since we're on the subject mine is because the Stingray might be my #1 amp and if it is then I have a back-up just in case I ever need to send it back to Doc for a tune up or repair...
and I also wanted to keep the beer stains off of the blonde #6 ray so I got #22 (Put up the original head cab) and put it in a Black n tan tolex head so I could wear it out...
I've ALWAYS been a firm believer in having a back-up of anything you can't do without... which is why I had an RX and then got an RX ES but that was pre Stingray so... I just got another Maz 18 Jr 2x10 combo and I'd also Love to have a Maz 18 head too... you can have two Z's exactly alike and with a simple switch of cabs/speakers you have two really different rigs.... neat.
another reason.... I LOVE speaker swaping! and to do it scientifically you have to have a Control group... which means, you nead more than one of the same type Z right.... well, it was worth a try.

Ah, the scientist in Jason comes out! Good point Jason. I have a couple of Johnson J212 cabs, and in one, I have a V30 and a G12H30. Since the cab is stereo, I can run 1 Ghia into the V30 and the other into the G12. I use an A/B switch, so using 2 Ghias, I'm really hearing the tonal differences in the speakers without the amps biasing my opinion. And, as dependable as Z amps are, I always have a spare Z with me on a gig. It's so much quicker to plug in a new amp, than it is to start to trouble shoot a tube problem, or some other problem during the gig. And it's so nice having the same amp to keep your sound the same.

I completely overlooked the "spare rig" factor.
But, you gotta give me some slack, as my original rig has been 100% dependable every night. It just never crossed my mind...
Oh yeah Jason, I love the speaker swap / cab swap thing. As soon as I got the new combo, I put a Weber 50 Watt Blue Dog alnico in place of the G12. Although it ain't broke in yet, it is amazing how loud you can crank without distorting (which, counter to some, is my preference).

Running two amps in stereo is one idea. Maybe different tube compliments--one cleaner, one dirtier; or one tighter and one with more sag to it. Different EQ set up so you can switch tones mid-tune. The possibilities are endless!

Although I have not bought a second Z, I have often thought about it because I like to run in stereo with effects--big sound with panning and delays and so on. Of course, that is lost if you have a mono p.a., play in a corner or other horrible place that so many country club gigs end up. I have the 2-12 combo, and I would want roadies if I went with two! I do think 2 of those running simultaneously would be overkill for most rooms!

Not to mention that if you have a nice stereo delay unit (I use the Fulltone tape echo) you can have the fundamental coming out of one, and the delay coming out of the other. Superb!
