I've been reading some info lately where some people use a 12AT7 in place of a 12AX7. In the stangray this is the PI position. Is this a recommended move for the Stangray and what would be the effects?

Is this a recommended move for the Stangray and what would be the effects? Decreases overall gain and scoops the midrange a bit. The stang already has pretty good headroom, but give it a shot if you're interested, it won't hurt anything.

You could also try a balanced 5751, which has less gain than a 12ax7 and more than the 12at7.
I recommend a balanced GE 5751.

I personally wouldn't do it for a couple of reasons. One, the 12AT7 to me is not the best in any position other than reverb circuits, used for its current drive. I know a lot of amps were designed for 12AT7 phase inverters, and I guess in those amps they work. I'd probably go with a 5751 or 12AY7 in the Ray.
The other reason is that the way the Stangray is designed. A lot of the magic of this amp (and the Mazerati GT) is in the power tubes. I think amps that have a "lot going on" in the preamp sound better when you reduce the gain on the PI. Like I said though, this is just my opinion.
I think the best answer is that it won't hurt anything, and if you like it, it's good! That's the same advice I give about biasing- if it's in the tubes "happy range" and you get the sound you're after, it's good!

If you want the gain structure of a 12AT7 use a 5751 as it has the same general gain structure, is smoother, more consistent and draws about 10 times less current than a hot running 12AT7.

As one who tried an AT7 in my Z and hated it i side with Phil and Myles. A 5751 also let the woodiness of my 335 through like no other tube in the PI slot. It was in an old Rx so YMMV.
