Have a question about re-tensioning of a tube socket. How often do you need to do this? After how many insertions/removals of tubes would this need to be done (on a preventive maintainece type of schedule)? Also, what are the signs that this would need to be done?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Paul G.

If they're loose (tubes flop around in the sockets) or you're getting an intermittent connection I'd tighten them. They need to be done every couple of years if you change the tubes often, if not they can go for years without a tightening.
Its a bit tricky to get the tension right, and this is one of those jobs where you run some risk of electocuting yourself, so get a tech or someone knowledgable to do it the first time, and make SURE the amp is both off, unplugged and the filter caps are drained before starting.

Thanks ZDOGMA, that is kind of what I was figuring.
Thanks again,

All this time and I've never had to do it to any of my amps. Just lucky I guess...

Actually the Z amps have not been around long enough for this to be an issue ... they started making them about 1987. Also ... the quality of the sockets on Z amps is far above what was used in vintage amps which were made in the 50s and 60s and even later. I have never had an issue with Z sockets that are used other than normal failure that can happen in a new amp to any socket. I have some clients that change EL84 output tubes every 30 hours and have done this for years and no problems with those sockets loosing tension. On the octal socket amps (6V6, EL34, KT66, KT88) you do not change tubes all that often and with the quality of sockets that are used if you don't have kids now but are planning to have kids someday then their kids ... (your grandkids) may have to retension the sockets. I would offer to do this for free but by then I will have been dead for a few decades
