Hi all,
I've read much about this subject already in this and in other forums, but I guess I'm still looking for more feedback. I currently have a Maz 38 Sr head with the Z Best Cab (G12H and V30). I would love to replace the V30 with either an alnico blue or gold.
From things I've read here, it sounds like people believe that the 15 watt alnico blue can handle the power of the Maz. Is this true?
Has anyone paired the G12H with a gold? ... impressions?

In a Maz Sr, I'd recommend a Weber 50 watt Alnico Blue for more headroom or a 30 watt for an earlier breakup. The 15 watt blue can handle it but will drive a lot quicker.
The Weber Blue/Silver Alnico combo in the 38 is wonderful! But, so is the Ceramic counter part.

If it were me I'd keep the ZBest as it, buy an open 1x12 cab, and stick a Celestion Gold in it. The Gold will cover a lot of sonic territory, and would be quite formidable in a Maz Sr...not to mention loud. I've never found a closed back that let an alnico "breath" enough for my liking.
As for ceramic vs alnico, there are lots of debates on that one. I myself float back and forth between the two. I generally prefer alnico, unless things get too loud...then like the sharpness, cut and punch of ceramic. Some guys comment of alnico as "having a blanket over your amp". I won't go that far, but the description is something along those lines when comparing the two.

I would definitely stick with a higher wattage speaker with the MAZ. My 2x12 open back was originally equipped with 2 Celestion Blues @ 15 watts each. Used with my Stingray, a 30 watt head, I felt like the speakers were strained to say the least at higher volume levels, and I didn't care for that sound at all.
I currently have a 30 watt Weber Alnico Blue Dog paired with the G12H30, and love it. I agree with Dan that either a 30 or 50 watt Alnico Blue Dog would be a great choice.
Even though I haven't heard the Celestion Gold, I expect it would be a good choice as well, if it sounds like the blue but with more power handling capability.

Leave the z best stock......... get an open back 1 x 12 I agree with Madison.....................I paired a 50 watt blue dog alnico up with my g 12 h in the z best and it was a little too smoooooth.........my z best lost its tightness and punch. I think of the z best as my cabinet if I play big outdoor gigs or huge halls...........People have lots of issues with the g 12 h and v 30, but, as a duo with the amp cranking..........I think its a winning combo. BW likes it!
Now, when I put the weber in a 1 x 12 open back cab, it seems to breath as madison says and it has nice clarity, "bounce" and wonderful chime with the maz 38. Very articulate and plenty loud for most BIG clubs. Mine's a 50 watter as I said above. With my 335 on the middle pickup I can get some sweet sweet chime and great rhythmn tones.
I'd say get an open back with some kind of high watt alnico..............Tone Tubby, Weber and even the Gold are probably gonna get you some sweet tone. JMO

Thanks all. I think for now I'm going to leave in the V30. I've heard from others too that Alnico speakers sound better in an open back cab.

Hi division17....and welcome. I switched over all the speakers here to (Alnico) Tone Tubbies in both 10" and 12" Cabinets including a couple of Z-Bests in closed back. All of them sound wonderful and the only Amps they see are MAZ Juniors and MAZ Seniors. I would think a single 1x12" Celestion Gold would be really nice with a Senior too though.....probably a bit brighter.
I notice you are from Montreal.....(I'm there once a month) I've been to Bistro-a-Jojo, and will check out Boutique Tone when I'm there in a week. Take care, Mark

m1911,
Thanks for letting me know about "Boutique Tone". I've never heard of it before ... is it new? I just went to the website and it looks very cool. Montreal really needs a store like that. Too bad they don't stock Dr. Zs. I see you're from Maine ... it's my favorite state. All the cool music stores seem to be around the Portland area.
