Just got my Ghia 1x12 amp today. It is beautiful. It sounds really good clean at lower volumes. But in its stock form with the Celestion Vintage 30 it is going to be way too loud for my needs before it overdrives. So I will be swapping tubes and speakers. So far I put in old Telefunken EL84, Mullard 12ax7 in V1 and JJ EC83 in V2. I also experimented with an old Jensen Alnico that I have in a 1x12 cabinet. This is a step in the right direction. I have lots of tubes and speakers that I will be trying out. Any help in what sounds good for lower volume blues breakup would be appreciated. I want an ineffecent speaker that is going to offer up some speaker breakup. This is truely a GREAT amp. Just from the hour of experimenting, I am sure I will be able to nail the tones I am after.
I also tried to attenuate it with a Weber Mass and Mini mass. Didn't like with either. It was fine for very minor attenuation but anything more and it just didn't sound good to me. Is it time to spring for an Airbrake?

Staightblues, Congrats! You'll love it...(see the other thread about a "Ghia pact" ok ;-)
I've had the Weber Mass, the Airbrake, and currently have the Hotplate...to my ears...they are the same...but even the mighty Ghia doesn't like to be choked back too much... I'm anxious to hear your reactions to various speakers...I've got a greenback in my 1x12 now and have a V30 in a box that I might not even use..lol... I'm possibly getting a 2x8 cab made....

I don't like an attenuator on the Ghia, Airbrake is awesome for the Z-28, Route 66, heck I've even used it on the Mini at home when I wanna rock and she's want's to "C.S.I." !! LOL
Just no diggie on the Ghia......
but your on the right track, speakers and tubes.....

So far I like it best through an old 1957 Alnico Jensen speaker. It is not very efficent and is helping keep the volume down.
I have also put an overdrive pedal in front of the Ghia and can get great low volume tone. I usually don't like using pedals but they sound so transparent in front of the Ghia maybe this is the best way to go with this amp.
