Hey guys, I have a technical question for you! I replaced my power tubes today with EL84S's with a rating of 6. Well, I start playing and I can hear a squaking, rattling noise when i smack a power chord. I did the tube tap test, and one of the 12AX7's was highly microphonic. Funny thing is, it wasn't until I swapped the power tubes. Is this just a coincidence, or is it from changing the power tubes? Thanks!

Sounds like you got a bad tube!

Matt, It's not uncommon for a brand-new tube to be microphonic. I'd return the set to the vendor, and put your old ones back in. Good Luck, Brad

I've never had a power tube change effect my preamp tubes before. I'd guess it's a coincidence.

Oh, I totally misread your question. I doubt changing the power tubes would cause the preamp tube to go microphonic, unless you may have banged into it during the change.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the responses. Well, oddly enough, it ended up being my attenuator that was causing the problem. While the 12AX7 WAS highly microphonic, it was not causing the problem. I bought a replacement 12AX7 and when the problem persisted, I tried playing the amp without the attenuator. I wish I could say the problem was still there (because a tube is a relatively cheap replacement), but the problem vanished. Gonna have the Ultimate sent in for a repair.

Glad to hear you figured it out. Too bad about the attenuator, though.
