How do these amps compare? I understand the general consensus is that the Z28 has more headroom, but how about the lows, highs, compression, breakup, "feel" etc. Eager to see some responses!

hey there,
having owned both of these.....
z28 is what I currently have. I like playing clean and loud (But not EZG50 LOUD!!!) and this fits the bill. the Rx jr is much more percussive, breaks up readily, takes pedals like a champ (as does the Z28) and is a great amp. I had it in the combo with a cel blue. Perhaps if I had the speaker broken in it would be different, but I think a greenback or a gold would suit this guy much better.
The Rx jr is a GREAT amp, and I think I will get one again. In my opinion, this is an amp that likes to be cranked and slightly dirty. Hit the OD switch and its overdrive heaven. I think this amp will kill pedal gas. If it was cleaner, longer, it would still be in my house. Period. I think a Z-best or 2x10's would be a great match.
Before I traded for the Z28, I was going to put in some 5751's in to tame the gain. I know Jumpmarine on this board did that and loves the tone.
Hope that helps.
Both are great amps!!
Z28 for clean, kinda fendery gain Rx Jr for Chimey EL84 goodness with a devil lurking inside!!

As Mangoman stated, the key to the Z28 is being able to open it up - play it past 11 or 12 o'clock at least depending on single coils or humbuckers. I had a Z28 but sold it for the RxJr because I couldn't open it up enough to enjoy it. The Jr has the master volume/attenuator on the back which makes it more usable for me. But for PHAT tone - Z28 is it. I did try the different rectifiers and the 5751's to tame it. Still sounded great - but too loud for my venues. I wasn't able to do a side by side but as I recall the 28 had more girth with my 1x12 or 2x12 cabs as opposed to the Jr. I'm sure it's the 6V6's. Enjoy your journey!
