Hello gents, I just bought some more NOS tubes, and there were several rectifers included, many of them still in the boxes. I did notice that one of them has a crack in the base. This is an old Sylvania 5Y3GT. I was wondering if this tube would still be usable, or if I should just toss it? I know these are supposed to be awesome rectifiers, but I wouldn't want to potentially damage one of my amps, just to save a few bucks...especially since 14 more 5Y3s were included. What do you think? Thanks, Brad

Brad, I seem to remember Myles answering another post about a similar problem. I can't remember the specifics so I won't comment any further, but you might want to check some of the posts in "Ask Myles".

Thanks, Brad Brad, I think you answered your own question. Assuming the vacuum is still good it probably wouldn't take much of a jolt to change that. I'd throw it in the trash, your not going to use the other 14 in your lifetime anyway

Yeah, I think you're right. The only amp I have that uses the 5Y3 is the Carmen Ghia. I'll probably save 4 or 5 of them, and sell the rest.

Brad,
The base has nothing at all to do with the vacuum. Just dab a little superglue on the crack if you are worried about the crack getting bigger.
The base could be missing a big chunk out if it and the tube will still be fine.
If the base and glass are loose a little superglue there too will help if there are physical microphonic issues. Loose base to bottle contact is very common in KT66 tubes as a sidenote on this different tube as an example of another superglue fix.

Myles, Once again, you're the man. Since I don't play out, I'm not really worried about future damage. But I'll put a few drops of superglue on there just to be safe. Thanks, Brad

But ... these days it isn't a boat .... it's a bus The white one is my home on the left. The right black one is Trace Adkins bus (Mark Horne - bus driver and guitarist). This was a few weeks ago during the Alan Jackson / Trace Adkins tour.
