I just bought a Carmen Ghia 1x12 combo with a Vintage 30 in it. I am trying to get early breakup at lower volumes to play small bars and house parties. What tubes should I use to accomplish this? I play traditional Chigcago blues (Muddy, Elmore James, BB King, sort of stuff)

Hi - Not very many blues players here. I say definitely go with all NOS. You probably need a strong 12AX7, for V1 but I read that you have a Mullard to use here. For my rectifier, I was happy with the one that was in there, (I think a GE) but I tried out a Mazda 5Y3, a large coke bottle shaped thing, and although I had to remove the back brace with not much room to spare, it definitely increased the bloom factor. For the EL84s I have been using Sylvanias or RCA, whatever is around. This has been the best I've found for a blues setup. Hope that helps - see you in Chicago.

I'm not really sure how much changing tubes will do to get you to that Chicago blues tone but I am using NOS tubes - mid-70s Mazda EL84s, with a Brimar 12AX7 in V1, a JAN GE 5751 in V2 and a JAN Phillips 5Y3. Sounds great to me! These replaced some gold script GT EL84s and a no-name 12AX7 that were in the amp when I bought it and are a great improvement in my opinion.

are you playing with single coils or humbuckers? try a guitar with p-90s in it, sounds like a blues-mans dream with a carmen ghia. you can talk to myles at Groove Tubes and he can recomend different tubes for you. but I like different pickups hot single coils or mild humbuckers are fun...

guitarlightening - agreed - a P90 guitar into a Ghia is a great blues combo. I also really like my CS Esquire (10k Nocaster pup) for that Muddy Waters tone and my Ibanez LP (mid-70s DM low output PAFs) for a big fat blues.

Myles, Curious what speaker you like in a Carmen Ghia combo? That is pretty subjective and it can be pretty complicated as the Ghia is not "speaker fussy" ... just about any speaker sounds great with it. But .... if it were a 1x12 combo I personally would opt for the upgrade and get a Vox blue in the amp. The stock speaker is also killer and more "modern" sounding so it is also hard to beat. A Vox Blue and V-30 have the same high efficiency at 1 watt in = 100dB out at 1 meter so they are the same level for the most part. Just different "flavors". Both great.
